#1: The Confluence - View to the East

(visited by Rainer Mautz and Suyu)

09-Jan-2005 -- 6:30 a.m. I get up and have breakfast

7:00 a.m. I take a tube from London Hammersmith to St. Pancras Station

7:40 a.m. I arrive in St. Pancras only to see that all trains have been cancelled due to a fire on the railroad tracks. With other travellers I queue in front of the station in order to catch a substitution bus. But instead of a bus, we are cramped into a taxi, five travellers and even more suitcases.

The taxi takes us to St. Albans which we reach after a one hour drive and a bill of £80.40 Luckily none of us has to pay that. After catching a local train in St. Albans and changing again at Luton Airport I finally find myself back on the original planned route towards Nottingham.

My friend Suyu joins in at Leicester station and we reach Nottingham shortly after. In Nottingham the GPS tells us to go another 11.2 km to the confluence point. Although the weather is very windy we decide to hike to it. We leave Nottingham towards the north-east through the suburb Colwick and then continue our hike on muddy footpaths. The whole area is soaked with water and so are our shoes after a while.

At 3:30 we approach the confluence. Our first attempt is stopped abruptly when we meet two guys in pseudo-military outfit with rifles. We prefer to turn around and try another approach from the east side. At about 280m from the DCP we find a turnoff from the main road.

The final approach is not spectacular: climbing some gates, hiking around some hedges and then we reach the point. It is just the right time to take pictures because it is sunset already.

On our way back we took at train directly from Lowdham station which is just 800m from the CP. While waiting for the next train home we explain the idea of confluence hunting to some locals .

CP visit details:
Time at the CP: 3:50 p.m.

Duration: 1 day

Distance of the nearest road: 280m

GPS height: 10m

Description: The point is about 10 m into a field soaked completely with water. The area is flat, some houses of Lowdham are nearby (ca. 150m).
