5th confluence visit out of a trip of 8

Continued from 48°N 13°E

After two sunny days Saturday started off cloudy. After a delicious breakfast I drove out of Salzburg at nine o’clock and after 10 km I took the German A8 motorway for Munich. The motorway was very crowded in the opposite direction and there were traffic jams in several places – many Germans had already started their Easter holidays and were travelling to ski resorts of Austria or further to the South. Fortunately, the road towards Munich was passable without bigger problems.

Travelling along the 48th parallel of latitude the next confluence point to visit should be the one at the 12th meridian. However, I had already visited it a couple of years ago so I skipped it now and headed directly towards the 11th meridian.

I managed to quickly pass by Munich (the city still lacks the southern beltway) and I drove west on A96 until exit no. 29 (Greifenberg). There I turned to the south and after 15 km I arrived in the village of Hofstetten. From the narratives of previous visitors I knew that it was not possible to drive directly to the CP. The question was where to start the hike from to have a pleasant and not too long way.

At first I tried to approach the point from the West but more than 3 km before the target I encountered no entry signs. Then I drove south but that attempt also failed. Finally I found a nice country road towards the east that brought me to a little stream that was ca. 1 km away from the confluence. Further driving was not allowed for a non-agricultural vehicles so I parked the car near a shed and continued on foot.

The sky was still overcast and it was much colder that the previous day. I walked through meadows and pastures located among little hills. After a pleasant 20-minutes walk I came to the field full of molehills and among them I located the zero point. Unfortunately, the promised beautiful views of the Alps were somewhere behind the curtain of clouds.

There were many sheds (probably for storing hay) and several shooting platforms around but no houses – the nearest human dwellings were a couple of kilometres away. Easily visible was the steeple of the church in Obermühlhausen. Following some other, more comfortable route I returned to the car and had my déjeuner sur l'herbe. For a short moment the sun came out making the surroundings much nicer.
