#1: The Confluence from 448 m Distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz and Elionora)

16-Jan-2021 -- Has Corona any positive aspects? Yes, it has: we are not allowed to work in our offices anymore. Working from home is now compulsory. But more precisely, work from anywhere is now allowed (besides the office itself). So after spending a vacation in Namibia and South Africa we decided not to return to Zurich, but rather stay in Cape Town for a while. We currently live in a fully equipped rental house in Camps Bay and enjoy the summer in the southern hemisphere. At the time of writing, South Africa faces lockdown level 3, which means that beaches are closed, alcohol is forbitten and after 9 PM is a curfew. However, this is by far the better option compared to the full lockdown in Europe.

While working during the week, we have time to make excursions on the weekends. This Saturday, we “booked” a hiking trail in the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve. Yes, you read correctly, it is now necessary to book a “place” for a hiking trail. Those who hadn’t booked were not allowed to get inside the park.

The confluence is 600 m from the waterfall trail. We parked about 2.5 km from the confluence at the official parking lot and followed the trail, until we reached the minimal distance to the confluence at a river. We left the trail and followed the river. But it was raining a bit and the round rocks in the river were very slippery. So we progressed very slowly. We also tried to walk above the river in the shrubs, but they were dense and wet.

After we had spent half an hour to make 150 m, we decided to quit. We returned the same way that we had come until we reached the hiking path and then hiked for another 3 hours on the trail.

In the afternoon, the weather improved, but we didn’t make a second attempt. As always: it is not important whether the confluence is reached or not. The most important thing is that you enjoyed that day.
