15-Apr-2006 -- It’s been a long cold winter in Bavaria – the longest in living memory. When we arrived a few days ago, it was surprising to find fresh thick snow in the fields. It dawned milder this morning, with most of the snow disappearing overnight, so it was the perfect day for a drive through the lush green countryside to visit the closest confluence point.

Even though this confluence point has been visited several times, I was intrigued as to the reason why a monument had been erected at this point.

We set out from the small picturesque village of Mittereith in the shadow of the Alps and wound our way through the narrow back roads towards 48N 12E. This is a beautiful part of the world - rich green pastures; immaculate traditional styled farm houses and out-buildings; churches, grand and small, standing within close proximity throughout the area. From the smallest farmhouse chapel to the largest church – all are well maintained – some with “onion” domed steeples, others tall and slim and being Easter time, the bells regularly toll and the doors stand open.

From Prien am Chiemsee, we drove through the villages of Rimsting, Endorf, Halfing, Griesstaett and Rott and on to Assling – all the time following the road and with the arrow on the GPS pointing virtually straight ahead.

This confluence point must be one of the easiest in the world to find. Just beyond Assling, beside the road on the edge of a fallow cornfield lies the spot. We arrived at 11:25 a.m., took the photos, noted that the altitude was 483 m and then took a closer look at the monument which is located beside an old bridge about 50 m from the confluence point indicated on the GPS.

The inscription reveals that it was erected in 1997 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Social Democratic Party (the major left wing party in Germany) in the Assling-Loitersdorf division. When you think about it – marking a confluence point in a field - is an unusual way of celebrating a political birthday but one which the participants of this Project would no doubt thoroughly approve.
