21-Oct-2012 -- I had visited the confluence point 49 N 6 E in the French region Lorraine on the day before and visited this confluence point in the region Alsace on a Sunday afternoon with temperatures of about 20°C. The motorways A6, A8 and A62 and the country road B10 took me to Hinterweidenthal, a small town in the Pfälzerwald (Palatinate Forest), the largest contiguous forest in Germany. Side roads running through Dahn and Bobenthal took me from Hinterweidenthal to the German-French border between the villages St. Germanshof (D) and Weiler (F). The village St. Germanshof, now a part of Bobenthal, was an object of dispute between France and Germany over the last 250 years. In April 1949 St. Germanshof became a part of France, leading to massive protests among the inhabitants. These protests were successful and so St. Germanshof was given back to Germany in September 1949. One year later, in August 1950, 300 young people stormed the checkpoint and hoisted the flag of Europe. Theis event is commemorated by a monument and an information panel (in German, French and English) at the checkpoint. Ole Henseler also mentions this checkpoint in his report describing his visit of the confluence point in April 2011.

After about 15 min at the border, I continued my way to the confluence point and drove through Wissembourg and Altenstadt and reached the confluence point after 20 minutes. The confluence point is located close to a parking lot for hikers on teh road between Altenstadt and Schleithal. The picture of the confluence point shows the parking lot and the forest surrounding the confluence point. The pictures in the four cardinal directions were taken outside of the forest at the parking lot as the pictures taken at the confluence point would have shown nothing but trees (the confluence point is located 10 m into the forest). The picture showing the view to the south shows that the dusk set in and so I started my way back at 6 pm.
