25-May-2006 -- 8th confluence out of a trip of 8

Continued from 52°N 9°E

I had not planned to visit any more confluences during my trip, but when I stopped for lunch near Magdeburg, I realized that it was only 3 PM and I had enough time to go to 52N 12E. I decided to travel via Schönebeck and cross the Elbe River (the second longest river in Germany) at Barby. There was a small red dot on my map at the place where I expected to cross the river, which I interpreted (without looking it up in the map’s legend) as a place with a scenic view to the river. How wrong was I…

Via Gnadau, with some detours on gravel roads, I came to Barby. What a surprise it was when I arrived at the shore of the river but there was no bridge! It turned out that the red dot stood for ferry crossing. Fortunately there was indeed a ferry that carried people and cars through the river. I waited a quarter or so until it reached our shore and boarded along with some cars and a group of cyclists. The stream in the river was quite strong but the ferry was large enough to safely reach the other bank.

From there I went via Walternienburg to Güterglück. Güterglück is a junction railway station and there was a lot of railway lines there. Along one of (probably unused) railroad tracks I reached some abandoned railway buildings. I parked the car and went towards the confluence but I was stopped soon by a DB-sign “Betreten verboten” (trespassing prohibited). Well, bans should be respected, on the other hand I couldn’t see any real danger since the railroad was not used for years. Since the distance to the CP was slightly above 100 m I decided to make a trade-off and entered the forbidden area but only for about 20 m. Being some 80 m from the actual CP I settled for that position, took the pictures and retreated to the car. Unfortunately, I had run out of the films so only 2 pictures are from the “real” camera, the other two were shot with mobile phone.

From Güterglück I went to Lutherstadt Wittenberg – the city of Martin Luther, where the Protestant Reformation had its origin. On October 31, 1517 on the door of the main entrance of Castle Church Martin Luther posted his 95 theses, starting a theological debate that resulted in the birth of the Lutheran, Calvinist, and other Reformed Churches. Having walked through the old town I hit the road for the last time and at 23:00 I arrived home. That concluded my 5 days and 2300 km long journey, which gave me opportunity to visit eight new confluences.

Wzdłuż jednej z nich (najprawdopodobniej nieużywanej) dojechałem do zrujnowanych i porzuconych zabudowań kolejowych.
