Continued from 52°N 11°E

From 52N 11E I went to the famous, medieval little towns of Quedlinburg and Wernigerode. Especially Quedlinburg (that is on the UNESCO World Heritage List) is in my opinion worth visiting due to its well-preserved timber-framed buildings, Romanesque church of St Servatius, and a castle overlooking the town. From there I drove along the Harz Mountains, passed by Goslar, crossed the A7 highway, and via Wöllersheim headed north towards Evensen. I carefully observed the GPS Navigation screen and stopped the car when the distance to the confluence point reached its minimum value of ca. 900 m, what took place on the road between Wöllersheim and Evensen.

It turned out later, however, that one can drive much closer to the confluence – you should drive up to Evensen, go through the village and then head south-west – this way one can get as close as some 400 m from the confluence. But I didn’t know about that then, so I parked the car on the edge of a little wood and went for an evening walk.

Along the tree line I went west, making shortcuts through the field here and there. The area must be a good feeding ground for wild animals as I noticed a raised hide at the forest edge. After a quarter or so I came to the point that was ca. 40 m away from the confluence. The remaining distance I had to cover between young plants growing in the field, but I did it very carefully and almost no vegetation was trampled. Locating the exact point wasn’t difficult and soon I took the usual pictures towards four points of the compass. In the horizon you can see wind turbines – quite a common view in Germany. Of course, it is a source of cheap and clean energy but don’t they spoil the landscape?

From the confluence I went another 150 m to the west where I reached a forest road. I followed it towards the car and at 51N59.9034 9E59.9166 I encountered a little confluence monument. It was a very basic armillary sphere (spherical astrolabe) mounted on a concrete post. Next to it there was an information board describing the “Schnittpunkt vom 10. Längenkreis Ost u. 52. Breitenkreis Nord” with an interesting note regarding the position of the sun on 15 April, 14 June, 1 September, and 25 December – on these days at 12:20 (CET) the Sun is exactly in the South. At 19:30 I came back to the car and departed to Wolfsburg.

Z przecięcia 52N 11E pojechałem do Kwedlinburga (niem. Quedlinburg) i Wernigerode – dwóch znanych średniowiecznych miasteczek.

O 19:30 dotarłem do samochodu i wyruszyłem do Wolfsburga.
