#1: Overview

(visited by Karl Bryk)

14-Aug-2021 -- This is the last of 10 CP visits made during a 2 week trip to Sweden.

The previous is N62 E16.

Around 15:00 we arrived North of the CP near the shoreline of Älgeredssjön, around 260m from the CP. There was no obvious way across the fields or properties to the shoreline so we decided to drive to the South side of the lake just to take a look with the hope of finding someone with a boat but but not really expecting to visit the CP. After a short drive along a rough track to the lake shoreline we arrived at a small quarry (N61.99843 E17.00339).

I decided to walk along the shoreline to the closest point to the CP, take some photos and post the visit as incomplete. While walking the few metres to this point I saw a boat out on the water. I did think of calling the rower over with the hope of persuading him to take me out but the wind was blowing and the boat was a few hundred metres away.

When I got to the closest point (N61.99908 E17.00077) I found the CP was 100m away so reasoned that if I could wade into the water a few metres, taking into account the GPS accuracy of 2m, I could be within the 100m required for a successful visit. I would depend on how quickly the depth of the water increased - we had been at lakes where we could wade out 50m and still be in 1m of water.

I returned to the car and told Heidi my plan - she had declined to come out into the cool windy weather. We headed back to the shore, I put on my swimming trunks and headed in. Luckily the depth of the water did not increase too fast and I managed to get to within 93m of the CP. It had been worth suffering the cold wind and water.

This is the first summer visit of this CP, and the first successful for 19 years, but shows it is possible without a boat or waiting for the lake to freeze over.

Heidi declined to get into the water so is not included in the list of visitors so I guess we will have to make a repeat visit in winter after all, or in summer with access to a boat.

The CP visits were over. A few more days were spent hiking and sight seeing before flying back home. It was a great visit and look forward to another next year.

Fingers crossed !!
