09-May-2009 --

09-May-2009 --

We decided on May 09 to go in search of the confluence N11 ° W71 °, accepting the invitation of the companion Héctor Carrero who already had realized the hunt of the above mentioned confluence. After we read the reports of the previous visits and had studied the location in MapSouce and in Google Earth, at 07:30 am we congregated a group of members of the GPSYV Team Zulia on the Service Station La Victoria (N10º34 ' 31 " W71º30 ' 50 ") to taste a succulent breakfast and to make our trip towards the awaited confluence where we all, with the exception of Héctor, would have the premiere in this interesting activity.

At 08:30 am drove towards the distributor of Santa Rita to take the road 3, known as Falcón-Zulia in route to the village of Casigua, located in the Municipality Mauroa, of our neighboring state of Falcon, arriving at approximately 10:00 am to the point where the GPS was saying we were 2 km the confluence point. Nevertheless we saw the service road that goes parallel in sense southwest - North-East to the pipeline that transport oil from Cabimas (an oil field development area), on the West coast of Lake Maracaibo, up to the Amuay refinery on the Western Coast of Paraguaná Peninsula. We decided to continue up to the town of Casigua to get to know its customs and economic activity.

Once we arrived, we could observe houses almost all of colonial type, some of which are in lamentable deterioration, and a beautiful old Church with a typical colonial architecture of the 17th century. We took some photos of the town and some group photos. We had the opportunity to visit the house where “The Liberator“ Simón Bolívar slept in the year 1826 when he passed through with his Army.

At 10:50 am we decided to continue towards the confluence point. We returned southwest up to an entry to the pipeline that runs on a course to the North-East. Already our GPS were showing that we were approximately 3 km from the desired point. We took a trail between km 85 and 90 of the pipeline to find the house of Mr. Vicente Chirinos and his family, who Héctor Carrero knew from a previous visit. We explain to him what we were looking for and he, of a very good disposition, offered to accompany us up to the confluence point, 2.7 km from where we were.

We decided to leave two of the vehicles and to go all in the three remaining ones, which were most adapted to the topographic conditions of the zone. We initiated the approximation to the point of interest on an old existing trail, crossing a section of 1.5 km of much typical vegetation of the zone, cactus, cujíes and teasels. During our tour it became necessary the use of machete to open the narrow route, which later opens into a wide desert, which allowed to do an across country tour, arriving to the point at 11:35 am. and with an elevation of 17 masl.

The Confluence Point N11 W71 is located on an arid coastal plain, with xerophytic vegetation and is found precisely where there is a bramble patch (Cují). Only for mere 20 meters it is not possible to arrive to the point in the vehicles. The total tour was 220 km. After taking the regulation photos, we proceeded to celebrate in site with cold drinks our first hunted confluence, for which we expect it is the first of many more to come.

This zone is totally desert, the locals live of goats breeding, and shrimp harvesting. On having ended with this activity we decide to go back to the town of Casigua, following another trail from the confluence point with the help of our guide Mr. Vicente Chirinos. This route runs in sense northwest and connects it with the main road of access to the village and that can be used for the next visits when the climate is dry. It should not be used in the rainy season to avoid getting stuck in the mud.
