15-Oct-2011 --

15-Oct-2011 --

When released the report of the visit the confluence 10°N 65°W which was named after The Mob, proceeded to convene within GPSYV community, a new hunt on this occasion for the confluence 11°N 69°W under the name The Mob 2.

To me this hunting represented a personal challenge, because in January of the year 2006 when the confluence still had not been accessed, I made the attempt to reach it, achieving only a rapprochement from the South of 700 meters. For me this hunting meant The Revenge. Subsequently, the excellent confluence hunter with his team Rosalda Roscioli manages to conquer it by the east, by the same site where I had tried to get that afternoon but it was necessary to finally abandon the attempt due to the attack of wasps.

Given that the expected participation in this hunt was high and we had heard that the roads of the area had been affected by the heavy rains of the past year, several preparatory actions were carried out. In the first instance, Rosalda contact Montenegro family owners of Agua Blanca farm in the vicinity of the confluence, to see if they allow us to camp on his property, those who gladly agreed. Rosalda also contacted the owner of the farm where the confluence is located, in order to explain our visit and let us open the gate to access us towards CP as much as possible. The owner gave permission and indicated that it would leave the gate without padlock for that day, but he added that in case of rain the internal trail is virtually impossible even for 4x4 vehicles.

Continuing with preparations, Rosalda in a weekend to went the farm were we where spending the night to check the facilities they had, in addition to verify roads conditions in the region, passing through post photos and videos that allowed us to refine the logistics. There was still the question of a broken bridge since 2010 between Maicillal and the Tacamire River to know the possibilities of access from East to CP area, for those hunters who came from eastern or center region of the country. For this, another special confluence hunter Vincenzo Vecchio on a trip that he had to do Caracas to Barquisimeto, makes a huge detour to pass along that path and verify if there was access, confirming that even the bridge is down, it was feasible and without any problems go through the river of the bridge in question. This information was vital and decisive in shaping the final plan because if we arrive to that bridge and there is pass, we would make a long turn to reach the confluence area by West side and would be easily 4 additional hours.

The announced date with a month and a half in advance for this hunt, was on 15 October, to also celebrate 5 years of the successful 1st visit to this confluence. The days leading up to the hunting, we constantly check satellite imagery of the climate, detecting constant rain every day, which would be much more exciting and challenger hunting. Practically from all parts of the country, hunters are activated to go to this hunting. Therefore, leaving Friday 14 to overnight in Caracas, Francisco Montoro and Iván Ramírez in his Pajero Montero by ferry from Margarita island, from Puerto Ordaz Tomas Velásquez, from Maturin Jose Toledo, his wife and two daughters, from Barrancas del Orinoco Leonardo Velásquez with his wife Yajaira and his son Junior. To spend the night in Barquisimeto, leave from Maracaibo Héctor Carrero who picked Edgardo Martínez up, then to spend the night in Tucacas leaves Valencia Andrés Amadio with his wife and to spend the night in Valencia comes from La Guaira Saúl Pérez and his wife.

On October 15 at 5 a.m. depart from the agreed meeting point on the outskirts of Caracas (N10 18 15.9 W66 53 32.8), Cathy Villalba in his Montero accompanied Leonardo Velásquez, wife and son; Miguel Sanchis with Matthias Mogelin and Alberto Delgado in his Land Cruiser; Tomas Velásquez, Freddy Mogollon and Jorge López in his Cherokee; Hernán Pell and his son Diego and one of the sons of Vincenzo in his Dodge Dakota; Oscar González in his Trailblazer (subsequently collect Carlos Chávez in highway); Mario Tavares and his son in his SUV Ford; Jesús García, his wife Ana and his brother Juan in the Land Cruiser Meru of his brother; Jose Toledo, his wife and two daughters in his Ford Ecosport; Vincenzo Vecchio his wife, one of his sons, his brother-in-law and his girlfriend in his Toyota Fortuner; Katiuska González and his partner in a PowerWagon; I with my son Ricardo and Rainer Bostelmann on my Land Cruiser. Francisco Montoro and Iván Ramírez call by phone and they tell us that they were a little delayed, so we started as agreed and they soon reached us. This is how start the activity in the day with 36 confluencer.

Soon when we passed La Victoria city, Katiuska calls us by mobile phone indicating that the PowerWagon with which they were travelling was presenting motor fuel failures so they should abandon the hunt. According our plan, 34 confluencer arrived at the agreed meeting point in Valencia (N10 17 54.1 W68 02 31.6) at 6: 30 am where we met with Leandro Faraudo accompanied by Vicente Santorsola and José Estanga in his Pajero Montero and Aldo Platini and his son in his Land Cruiser Meru. Saúl Pérez and his wife had already left earlier from Valencia in its Land Cruiser 40 series, because their vehicle is somehow more slowly than the rest of the caravan thus to not delay us in the established schedule. The Caravan is now 39 confluencers.

Some vehicles make a short stop in El Palito for fuel, but once again they reach the caravan, but before arriving at Boca de Aroa in N10 35 28.0 W68 14 46.3, Oscar's Trailblazer spilled all the hydraulic fluid transmission so he stopped at the edge of the highway. We stop and assessing the transmission problem, but Oscar tells us that we should continue with planned, he will stay with Carlos Chávez there with problem because they are located in a not isolated site, very close to a town and with cell phone coverage. With the unfortunate neglect of Oscar, the remaining 37 confluencers continue with the established plan meeting with Andrés Amadio and his wife as we had agreed on a service station in N10 52 12.3 W68 22 18.6 where they were waiting for us in their Land Cruiser with many ice packs to upload our coolers. Now the 39 confluencers caravan continued his trip until arriving at the service station at Yaracal (N10 58 31.2 W68 32 42.0), where we refill our vehicles, had a well deserved breakfast and there started a great cats and dogs rain. Here Saul and his wife become part of the caravan then we becoming 41 confluencers.

Out of Yaracal always transiting the highway 3, a intensive and heavy rain was always accompanying us up to Maicillal where we left the highway 3 to take a local road in poor condition which goes toward La Taza and that allowed us to get the general meeting point (N10 56 58.4 02 W69 29.7) where we would be meet with the rest of confluencers that would come from Barquisimeto. Rain stops alone this road, but the sky was permanently overcast and grey and the reflex wet pave warmed us that had rained in the area. We arrived at the general meeting point at 11:15 am within the established time.

The team of confluencers coming from Barquisimeto city made a late departure but finally succeed with Rosalda Roscioli and Eva Torres in his Land Cruiser Prado; Tavel Álvarez his wife and 2 children in their Toyota Hilux; Héctor Carrero and Edgardo Martinez on their Terios 4WD and a little more behind Octavio Camacaro from Acarigua in a sedan vehicle with his wife and two children (later Santa Cruz Bucaral joins his mother), who by mechanical problems have to abandon the hunt. So finally almost at 1:00 pm 49 confluencers are gathered at the general meeting point to face the final approach and will fight with the terrain conditions to conquer the confluence.

From this point the way is a dirty muddy road mostly of clay, which sticks very easily in wheels avoiding a good grip, so conduction required a good dose of caution. This route goes along all the time to Tacamire River and is predominantly northward. Arriving at N11 00 26.6 W69 01 32.0, we find the open gate and Miguel Sanchis in his Land Cruiser who goes in front of the caravan, proceeds to drive in this internal farm path which was under difficult conditions. Behind Miguel enters Tomás in his Cherokee but fails to move forward more than 100 mts getting stuck in the mud. Under this situation, Andrés enters with his Land Cruiser equipped with a WARN 8274 winch and manages to recover to the Cherokee Thomas at 1:45 pm. By radio we communicate with Miguel about this situation, so he returns to explore the access that had used Rosalda in 2006, which is a trail a bit more to the North.

Already with all vehicles on the road that runs along the Tacamire River the advance return northward, we face a river cross (N11 00 37.7 W69 01 33.1) which although it not had any kind of difficulty, but the inclination, slippery condition, depth of grooves of the descent path to reach the river and ascent out of it became a constrain for several vehicles in the caravan despite being 4x4. This pass required the use of special driving techniques and be cool and calm nerves.

The point overcome by Rosalda, Andrés, Miguel, Aldo, Saúl and me in our Toyota Land Cruiser; with some problems that did not happen to worth, Vincenzo manages to pass the site on his Fortuner; Cathy, Francisco and Leandro pass without problems this point with their Pajero Montero (Leandro celebrates his battle going in the muddy uphill) and Tavel in his Toyota Hilux. At this point given the hour, the imminent return of the rains and the uncertainty that can be succeeded this hunt, Mario with his son and Jesus with his wife and brother decide not to cross the river and abandon the hunt. The rest of the confluencers decide to pass this point walking leaving the Tomas’s Cherokee, Hernan’s Dakota and Hector’s Terios behind. At this time were 44 confluencers and regrouped in vehicles that passed, we continue our progress but we fail to see the entrance to the trail used by Rosalda in 2006 to go to the confluence which I had used in my not completed hunt. After almost a kilometer we returned and carefully managed to discover the access which was without padlock but hidden by high vegetation.

Immediately all vehicles entering the trail but we only managed to move just 300 mts, because vegetation and mud stop us to continue. At that precise moment the rain starts up again and by radio I said that we must activate the plan B, which was not otherwise but walking until we reach the confluence. We were at more than 3 km in a straight line from our objective. At this time the group of 44 confluencers is divided into 2, one that we call Team A, consisting of 20 hunters willing to walk from there to the confluence (who ended up getting successfully crowned the confluencing day). Vincente and Saul’s wife decide to stay in the car, but the rest of 22 hunters (Team B) take the decision to return and try to go by the trail that Tomas got stuck previously, but only vehicles with better 4x4 capabilities.

Then at 3:15 pm began the hike of 20 hunters in full rain which fortunately was short but anyway the ground was already well drowned and muddy. The mud we found was clay, which got stick it in the boots and every steps it meant not only the weight of the boots with mud but take off the boots from the floor on each given step. After about 400 meters we found a wire barbed fence without gate which stops us to continue, however Alberto can release 2 rusted wires were and the successful an opening that allows us to continue advancing towards our goal. While we hike, we used to listen far away on our right (to the South) the noise of an engine that seemed us a chainsaw or the Land Cruiser engine of Andres leading it to the maximum revs to advance in the muddy trail.

At 3:55 pm we arrived at the almost abandoned house of an elderly man who takes care of the estate and we continue our walk along paths of mud, opening ourselves access thru bushes and some time dense vegetation, dodging land flooded as far as possible. After much battling, at 4:33 pm we were doing between the trees, the glorious and pleasant The Confluence Dance, prize that all confluencer seeks to delight their eyes with all zeros shown in the GPS. We had a non-stop walked 3.5 Km, so given hour and the distance that we needed to walk back to get to our vehicles, immediately we proceeded to take the required photos and initiate the heroic return to perform the well-deserved celebration.

At 5:20 pm we arrived again at elderly men’s home and here we proceed to take the picture of the team that succeed conquer the confluence. On this point we divide into 2 groups, I need to rest at least 5 minutes and I wasn't able to walk at the same pace we had. For this reason, Rainer, Cathy, Alberto my son Ricardo stayed with me, while the rest of the group party heading the cars in order to arrive before sunset, arriving vehicles at 6 pm when the sun has already had concealed but still had some clarity. They had observed on the way back, vehicles track that were not observed in the way toward the confluence, thing that seemed strange to them. Given how slow I was walking, short stops that we did for me to rest, the darkness arrives but fortunately we all had flashlights with which we could move forward without a bad step or wrong way. We arrived again to the fence that we previously had released a couple of barbed wires, and Alberto to put them back in place again. We ended up reaching the cars at around 6:30 pm.

We all were very happy but also tired so once at the vehicles, we started our way to the ranch where we going to camp. We contact by radio the Team B at the ranch, telling them that we had managed to crown the confluence.

In relation to the B Team, they enter south trail at 3:56 pm in a caravan of 5 4WD with Andrés at the front, followed by Aldo, Vincenzo, Rosalda and Tavel. Andrés and Aldo are advancing rapidly, but Vincenzo stayed stuck in the mud after 800 meters in this trail in N11 00 27.7 W69 01 09.8. Andrés and Aldo reach trail that had walked Team A, leaving the vehicles in N11 00 39.8 W69 00 36.2 at 4:30 pm (Team A had passed already by this point at 3:54 pm going to CP). Andrés and his wife, Aldo and his son, José’s wife and her youngest daughter and one of Vincenzo’s sons then begin the trek to the confluence, passing by the house of the elderly men at 4:33 pm, just the same time that the Team A was performing the Confluence Dance, and continues their trek toward the confluence. However, in N11 00 22.8 W69 00 14.0 being 4:47 pm and resting 1100 meters and 20 minutes walk to the confluence (800 mts straight line) they decide to abandon the hunt because they arrived at a site of dense vegetation, were not prepared to break through it and had many children with them.

Team B returns and passed bay the elderly men’s house 5:02 pm (Team A makes it back at 5:20 pm without knowing of the activity of the Team B), mounted in their 4WD. When they arrive as the rest of the Team B, Vincenzo’s truck was already rescue with the help of locals as well as the remaining of the team. Already assembled Team B take direction to the farm where we had planned to spend the night and wait for Team A.

In this satellite image, you can see the tracks traveled by Team A and Team B as well as other reference details of the hunt.

Once everybody was at Agua Blanca ranch, we officially began the celebration of hunting and the exchange of information on different events. The night propitiates camaraderie among good friends, kidding, joking while food was prepared. Gradually some were sleeping, others however continue with the party until about 2 am.

The next day everybody set the journey back to our homes and now all we talked about that this hunt should be repeated so that those who participated in it, have the opportunity to complete it. Not all confluences are easy, especially when weather conditions introduce additional difficulties. This opportunity 58 confluencers from all around Venezuela, emerging from their homes in search of the zeros of the confluence 11°N 69°W, but only 20 manage to conquer it successfully. Many stayed with the same taste and feeling that I had in January 2006, when being so close, I could not achieve the hunt successfully, I know that feeling so I am sure that will be a new revenge very soon.

Here you can enjoy a video that summarizes the great experience in the hunting of this confluence.
