04-Jan-2022 -- After spending the Christmas in my parents-in-law’s home, in Belo Horizonte city, capital of Minas Gerais state, and the New Year in my parents’ home, in Lavras city, south of Minas Gerais state, I started my short vacations of January in this city, and made a trip aiming to visit new confluences.

I left Lavras at Monday, January 3, and initially I visited two small cities in the region, Candeias and Ilicínea. In Ilicínea city, I took a snack, replacing the lunch. Then, I headed by the beautiful region of Furnas dam, I crossed the interstate line, entering in São Paulo state, and finished the first day of my trip in São José do Rio Preto city. A strong rain felt in some areas. I drove in this day by about 610 kilometers.

At the following day, Tuesday, I took a breakfast, checked out the hotel and headed straight to the 20S 50W confluence. After driving by about 130 kilometers, I turned right and started the small dirt road leg, 7.5 kilometers long.

The dirt road was in good condition, at least in first 4.5 kilometers. From there, the road turned narrower, indicating that it was in its final leg and would finish at the ranches at the edge of Água Vermelha dam, where lies the exact point.

Although it was possible to go ahead with the car, I preferred parking it and headed on foot, in order to avoid going so near to the ranches. As I already cited in other opportunities, I prefer not to talk with local residents when going, in order to avoid having the access denied. I only talk with them, if this is the case, when coming back.

I started the 3.8 kilometers hike up to the exact point. Even at the beginning of the hike, I passed near a center pivot irrigation, which makes characteristic circles clearly visible in satellite photos. A photo of the center pivot is included in my published photos.

The dirt road ends exactly in front of the homestead of the ranch cited by the previous visitor. A bit before, however, I entered in a rubber tree plantation, making a detour in order to avoid passing near the house. This is the second time that I had passed by a rubber tree plantation when visiting a confluence. The first was 21S 49W one, also in São Paulo state, visited In December 2011, more than 10 years ago. In both cases, I had published a photo of the little bowl collecting the latex.

The 20S 50W confluence lies, in theory, in Água Vermelha dam. In two previous visits, the exact point had been located in the water. The Google Earth photo also shows the point in the water, 65 meters to the shore, indicating that it’s possible to go to less than 100 meters to the exact point without entering in the dam. The first visitor, in 2004, had found the dam near this level. The second visitor, however, in 2007, had informed that the dam had been very full and he had only managed to register the visit using a boat.

Due to its circumstances, I was curious about how would be the level of the dam in this new opportunity. It had been raining a lot in the previous weeks. However, when I arrived there, I saw that the historic drought of 2021 prevailed and, to my big surprise, the exact point was completely dry! I hiked easily up to get all GPS zeroes and I was yet several dozens of meters to the water. This is a very interesting case of confluence in which each of three visits shows a very different situation.

The 20S 50W is the kind of confluence that Rainer Mautz names “hyperconfluence”, which is a confluence where both latitude and longitude are multiple of 10, making the GPS to show, if it is in the exact point, besides all zeroes of minutes and seconds, two other zeroes in degrees. This is my first hyperconfluence. It lasted a lot of time until I make my first register, considering that I have 170 registered visits, and that there is one hyperconfluence in each 100 confluences.

I had never concerned about prioritizing hyperconfluences, and Brazil is a country no so friendly to make a big collection of hyperconfluences. The country has 10 hyperconfluences, and only two out of them had been visited by anyone. A much lower proportion of visited ones than the Brazilian confluences in general.

The Southeast region of the country has two hyperconfluences, both in 20°S parallel. One of them is the current one, 20S 50W. Curiously, in east direction, the continent ends at 20S 41W confluence, and the 20S 40W hyperconfluence is the first one in open sea, with very hard access.

In the South region of the country, coincidentally, similar situation occurs. In 30°S parallel, the land confluences go up to 30S 51W. The 30S 50W hyperconfluence is the first one in open sea.

The Northeast region of the country has the 10S 40W hyperconfluence, in north of Bahia state, which had ever visited. I had passed about 25 kilometers beeline to this confluence, in one of my trips, in January 2013, in the leg between Capim Grosso and Juazeiro cities, as I cited in 7S 41W narrative. However, I had considered the 10S 40W confluence with a bit hard access to be visited in that opportunity.

The Center-West region of the country has the 10S 60W hyperconfluence, in north of Mato Grosso state, never visited and located in an area, apparently, with hard access, in Amazon Jungle.

Finally, five other Brazilian hyperconfluences, 10S 50W, 10S 70W, 0 50W, 0 60W and 0 70W ones, are located in North region. Four out of them are in Amazon Jungle, with very hard access. And the 10S 50W confluence, in Tocantins state, located at the edge of a lake, looks like, among the never visited ones, the easiest one (I had visited the neighbor 10S 49W, with very easy access).

Back to the current confluence. After visiting the point, I made all the way back to the asphalt and went ahead, stopping at Mira Estrela city to take a snack, replacing the lunch.

This narrative continues on 20S 51W.
