(visited by Werner Rossger and Werner Rossger)

Portuguese

25-Mar-2004 -- The 20º S 50º W confluence is located in the northern region of the state of São Paulo, near the border of the state of Minas Gerais, in the lake of Rio Vermelho, originated by one of the dams of the Rio Grande, which has a total length of 1390 km. The lake´s area is 647 square kilometers.

Climate is between tropical and subtropical, with dry winters and rainy summers. Average anual temperature is 23 degree Celsius. The terrain is pretty flat and belongs to the Upper Cretacean Bauru series (sand soil). The whole terrain is suitable for pastures and crops. Sugar cane, natural rubber and cattle breeding are the main activities.

Land belonging to Minas Gerais is not visible from the confluence, because it is situated at a secondary bay of the main lake. I visited the confluence following a business trip to the region. Access by car is easy, using a 7 km dust road deriving from the paved road that links Sao Joao do Marinheiro and Cardoso.

A native dweller, Fabio D. Santos, accompanied during the search. We realized that the confluence is located about 50 m into the water. We made the pictures from the margin because no boat was available. There is pasture all around the confluence. Looking eastwards we see a rubber tree plantation.
