30-Aug-2003 -- This would be a confluence filled Labor Day weekend. Nine successful attempts would be made making a large triangle across Nevada and partially into California with four confluences on each side. Proceeding east to 35n-115w, my plan was to proceed north to 38n-115w capturing four (
38n-115w), then due west to 38n-118w for three more (
38n-118w), then diagonally southeast capturing the remaining two (
36n-116w), leaving a single confluence in the center which, at 37n-116w, will likely never be visited. Total round-trip mileage ended up being 1240 miles.
The third confluence of the day I had planned to do by bike. Like previous visitor Jack Frickey, we also had trouble finding the road that appears on the maps. We stopped just north of 38N at a convenient pullout to the right just over 2 miles from the intersection. Unfortunately, to our left was a ridge of about a hundred feet or so that would have the effect of blocking line of sight between our Garmin RINO's. I was going to hike out to this one. About 20 minutes into my hike, I intercepted the road and then really wished I had brought my bike. I continued west towards Timber Mountain along relatively flat terrain and arrived at the point in under an hour.
I returned back along the road and came out at a point about .1 mile from where we had parked. The gate is at 38n-114 57.813w – just a little south of the pullout we had parked in. Had I taken my bike I could have done this in about half the time. In a high clearance two wheel drive vehicle it could have been done in less than half an hour there and back.
Total round-trip distance from highway 318 was 4.76 miles and time was 2 hours, 19 minutes. Time to start west (38n-116w)!
