14-Sep-2025 -- I visited this confluence point on day #187 on my long hike. This is the 11th confluence point that I am visiting on this trip and my first in Turkey on this trip. It has been more than one month since I stumbled on a confluence point in Bosnia.
Lately, our days have been quite similar. Each morning, we brew proper coffee in our hotel room and enjoy it in bed before heading to the buffet breakfast, all while catching up on tasks on our phones—route planning, emails, and other errands. Across Türkiye, breakfast seems to start at 7:00 a.m., but coffee, if available at all, is only served as instant. We’re usually on the road by 8:00 a.m.
We often manage to reach a restaurant for lunch and continue following the E80 highway toward Samsun, though I try to avoid walking directly along the main road whenever possible. Today, we hiked through a valley filled with rice paddies and even broke into song along the way.
Thanks to my friend Ross, who pointed out just in time that we’d be passing near the integer confluence point of 41°N and 34°E today. Indeed, it lay only 2 km off our planned route. Such points have, of course, been visited before—but I make a point of reading others’ reports only after my own visit. I prefer to experience the adventure independently, even if it means missing some practical details. You might compare it to a treasure hunt.
Guang doesn’t feel the need for such adventures; today, she took the direct route to the hotel, where we later met up. I followed the map and found the area around the confluence point quite mountainous yet inhabited. I had to choose between approaching from the settled side or through the forest—I chose the forest. I’d rather contend with natural obstacles than explain to a local farmer why I need to cross his yard to reach a virtual point.
From the forest side, I couldn’t get very close—the terrain turned out to be nearly vertical and densely overgrown. I did manage to cross a small stream, but had to stop 66 meters short. Still, that was close enough to count as a successful visit according to Confluence.org standards.
Tosya is just 5 km away and a pleasant town of about 30,000 people. A brand-new hotel, a restaurant that even served green beans without meat (a rarity!), and a somewhat dubious smoky basement shop where we bought two bottles of beer—all contributed to a cheerful evening.
