06-Aug-2022 – This is the last, 12th story about the journey from Moscow to Tashkent. Starting is here: 52°N 39°E.

After the confluence point 44°N 67°E I went further south, more precisely south-southeast to the Turkestan region to the village of Tortkul on the E38 highway. In general, the point 43°N 69° is located 9 km from this road in an almost flat desert steppe, but the Arys-Turkestan canal passes between the highway and the confluence, and it's not very clear where to overcome the canal. Obeying the advice of the navigator in my phone, I turned to the village of Arystandy, drove up to the bridge over the canal, but then the road went north quite far from my goal. Therefore, I, already ignoring the autonavigator, returned to the highway and drove to the village of Tortkul, and further to the village of Kyzylzhar. At its edge I found a crossing (at 42°57'30''N, 68°59'31''E) across the canal. From here there was a well traveled road to the east and a less traveled road to the northeast to my destination. CP was in 4.6 km.

On this road (unsigned on the map), I tried to get to the confluence. At first, the road wound through stunted bush, which soon ended and reached the power line. And then I remembered that my predecessor Philipp Funovits wrote about this power line! And just along it, there was also a path, most likely for the maintenance of this line. The second half of my way was already almost in the desert! Just like Philipp did 15 years ago, I reached this confluence in August, with almost 40-degree heat in the middle of the day. Only Philipp was walking without water, while I arrived in an air-conditioned car.

The confluence point is located in the steppe desert area in the north-west of the Bodibek district of the Turkestan region (before 2018 it called as South Kazakhstan region, or Ongtüstik Qazaqstan). In all directions the view is almost the same, but in the southern and southwest directions, a power line is visible and behind it a green vegetation strip along the canal.

CP visit Details:

  • Driving distance from previous CP: 230 km
  • Time at the CP: 1:50 pm
  • Measured height: 242 m
  • Weather: clear, +37°C
Another 250 km remained to Tashkent. Having left Moscow on July 31, I traveled a total of 4650 km, visited 12 confluences (of which 5 were new!), including 3 hyper-confluences (and for one of them, 50°N 60°E this was the first visit!).
