#1: The Confluence from 10 m distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz and Elionora)

04-Jul-2016 -- This is the first out of 11 reports on confluence visits in Canada’s Yukon Territory and Alaska. Three visits are to confluences that had not been reported yet.

Two days prior to this CP visit, we arrived at Whitehorse from Zurich via Montreal and Vancouver. After spending a day in Whitehorse and a night at Takhini Hotsprings, we started driving towards Alaska with our rental car, a GMC Terrain. We used this conveniently located confluence point as a “warm up” for upcoming challenges.

The turnoff from the Alaska Highway is at a place called “Canyon”, then it is 18 km on gravel to the Big Mountain Creek Bridge, where we parked with a remaining distance of 2.25 km.

The following hike through various terrains (flat and steep) and diverse vegetation (thickets, spruce forests, swamps) took about an hour. We were equipped with bear spay and bear bell. After an hour hike, we reached the confluence point, where our feet got wet for the first time, since the CP is located in a swamp with scattered narrow spruce. Flies and mosquitoes made the visit a bit unpleasant.

While taking the pictures my steps on the ground sounded a bit hollow. This was strange, since there was nothing else than moss, grass and water. A closer examination and excavation resulted in unearthing a bottle. Unfortunately it was not one with a message inside. Instead it was waste from a previous confluence hunter! I removed it and took it with me to the next garbage.

Right after the visit we saw a black bear, luckily were had just reached our car. We continued to Haines Junction and spent the night at Kluane Lake.

With this visit, I have now confluence visits in 99 countries, not counting the countries with incomplete visits in Azerbaijan, Guatemala, French Guiana, Kuwait and Burkina Faso.
