01-Jan-2014 -- The New Year`s Day started dull and cloudy, much too warm for this time of the year (+1°C) – and no snow at all! So what to do with 6 hours of daylight? – Trying to catch the winter a little bit further north on 61°N!

Half of the day was already gone when starting about noon from our house near Storvik on 60°36’N for a visit of CP 61N 16E. Just 50 km on a linear distance we had to cover 85 km on bumpy roads before parking our car at 1.40 p.m. beside a forest track, 700 m north-east of the CP in Dalarna. And here we found our winter – or what was left over from the last cold period before Christmas. On 400m above sea level the temperature was below zero and we could rejoice in steering our car across patches of frozen ground and through the remains of snowdrifts.

We could even afford a short snowball fight before heading through the open forest towards the CP. Crossing some recent traces and elk marks, we had no trouble too keep the satellite-signal. And as luck would have it, the CP was situated just on the brink of a forest clearance. So after a short dance with the receiver we caught the zeroes on the display at 2.15 p.m.

The dogs as well enjoyed this outdoor adventure, especially the second part of the chase. Setting our GPS navigator aside, their good noses lead us easily back to our starting point. (Of course, it was not really difficult this time. But during some of our confluence visits last summer, their noses relieved us from several delicate situations – more reliable, than any GPS navigator could provide under particular forest conditions (s. 58N 15E, 62N 11E)). A last snowball fight on this New Year`s Day, then we tackled our way back to Storvik at the onset of dusk.

Was also anfangen mit knapp 6 Stunden Tageslicht?
