#1: Looking towards the confluence about 100m away

(visited by Greg Sullivan)

03-Feb-2001 -- This confluence is rather easy to get to. I approached driving west along Bucketts Way, turning left onto Mograni Creek Road. Mograni Lookout is just to the east of the Mograni Creek Road turnoff, and normal people will probably want to stop there to check out the view. I drove straight past it, partly because I didn't want to be distracted from the task at hand, and partly because there was a busload of tourists there and I'd rather be at a place like that when it's less crowded. I could see that the tourists were probably going to be able to see me at the confluence down below. I wondered what they might think of me, walking around in a paddock staring down at my GPS.

The confluence is about 1km along Mograni Creek Road, and then about 100m off the road, to the southern side. Before getting out of the car, I had a very half-hearted look around for a house which may have been occupied by the owner of the property, but couldn't see anything. I then got out, and walked over to a barbed wire fence. The GPS said that I was 90m away. Although this is a "pass", I decided to keep going. The fence was very easy to negotiate, as was a second fence (also barbed).

At the confluence, I turned around to notice a car pull up just behind mine. It stopped there for a few seconds, and then kept going, pulling in to a driveway of a nice looking house - possibly the home of the owner. This house is on the northern side of Mograni Creek Road, over a rise. I just hadn't seen it from the road. Anyway, whoever it was, they didn't seem to mind that I was there. (I think it is highly likely that they spotted me, standing out in the open).

Looking up to Mograni Lookout, I decided that most of the tourists were probably thinking "that person isn't normal." A few might have been thinking "he's got a GPS - I wonder what's there." Fewer still may have been thinking - "oh - if only I had known there was a confluence there!" ;)

The photos are mostly self explantory. In Photo 1 (which I actually took last), the confluence is pretty much straight ahead, between the creek and the fence right at the back. (closer to the creek) Photo 2 shows the home across the road, with a van on Mograni Creek Road. I included the GPS shot in Photo 2 as well, since I would have otherwise gone over the maximim number of photos. In Photo 6 (Mograni Lookout), you can just make out the blue tour bus.

I drove straight past the lookout on the way back as well.

Greg.
