#1: The Confluence from 20 m distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

03-Sep-2018 -- This is the first out of 2 reports reaching confluence points on our hike eastwards.

Actually, we walked 1600 km from Zurich to Hungary to visit this confluence point, see the initiary of our hike. But to be honest – visiting this confluence point was only a nice side-effect on our way to a yet unknown point far in the east.

The night before confluence day, we reached the spar town GyomaendrÅ‘d about 20 km west of the confluence point. On confluence day we continued our hike eastwards along a water channel reaching the village Körösladány at noon time. After a simple lunch (no real restaurant was open – so we ended up having fast-food pizza), I measured the distance to the confluence point as 8.6 kilometres. Too short of a distance to miss the point. In addition, there is a direct road from Körösladány to the confluence point. But there was no bicycle rental and no public bus scheduled for the next hour. The confluence is actually at a train station called Kéthalom, but this station is unfortunately not serviced any more, i.e. trains from Körösladány to Dévaványa do not stop at the confluence point. So I considered hitch-hiking while Elionora would slowly continue the hike towards Szeghalom where we would spent the night.

Hitchhiking worked very well. Just 5 minutes walking along the road and a friendly girl in a small car took me to my strange destination. Strange, because Kéthalom is deserted. When I got off the car, I was only 80 m from the confluence point. There is only one farm house. Unfortunately, the confluence is just 7 m inside the fenced area of the farm compound. I actually had the chance to ask for permission to enter the farm, but I wanted to catch up with Elionora as fast as possible so I went back to the main road to find transportation for my return.

Again less than 5 minutes of walking along the road and a truck driver took me back to Körösladány, where I continued the hike with a total delay of 45 minutes. I reached our hotel in Szeghalom just 10 minutes after Elionora had arrived.
