#1: The Confluence from 10 m Distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

22-Nov-2019 -- This report is the second out of nine reports reaching or attempting confluence points during my 2-week bicycle trip around Cuba. The story continues from 21°N 76°W.

On the third day of my trip, I came through Cuba’s second largest town Santiago de Cuba. Even though this city is a major tourist destination, its nearby confluence point has never been visited.

From Santiago, I continued cycling to the southern coast for about 20 km. The confluence point is just 7 km from the coastal road and a nice beach. A track in a very bad condition leads to a village Cabòn. Since the tracks where not cyclable, I abandoned my bike in a yard of a family house and started hiking at a remaining distance of 4 km.

It didn’t look like a long hike, but the terrain is mountainous, and it is not obvious which of the many footpaths through the jungle will lead to the confluence point. In all, it took me two hours to get there. It was a great and pleasant hike in the peaceful forest. I only met hunters and sheep keepers.

To overcome the last 100 m, I descended through steep jungle – to only find out that the confluence is right on another footpath.

I returned a smarter way and was back to my bicycle within one hour. The rest of the day I had a wonderful ride along the southern coast.
