#1: The Confluence from 30 m Distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

21-Jul-2022 -- The story starts from 69°N 19°E and continues from 71°N 26°E.

The last 2 days of our trip in Northern Norway we spent in Tromsø. We rented an apartment in the town, via AirB&B. The nice owner allowed me to use her bicycle.

Even though it was going to be a rainy day, I decided to visit this confluence in order to have a tough, but exciting day. I first had to cycle 52 hilly kilometres northwards on the Island Ringvassøa. The shortest hike from a road would have been from the road towards Skogsfjord. But this would have added another 2 times 30 km cycling and the river crossing of the Skogsfjordelva. So I decided to approach the point from the western side named Skarsfjord.

I abandoned my bicycle, at the farm gate of Kråkdalselva in 5.2 km straight line from the confluence.

These 5.2 km sound like a piece of cake. As an experienced confluence hunter, I know that in pathless and hilly terrain that can be a lot. But I would never have expected such a tough walk. First of all it was raining and fog didn’t allow views. Secondly, the terrain was rugged and complicated such that it was difficult to keep the correct direction. Thirdly, the ground was soft and swampy or covered with boulders. Last, but not least, I didn’t bring my tough Garmin GPS and had to navigate with my mobile phone, which is hard to use when the screen is wet.

However, I made it to the confluence and back within 5.5 hours hiking plus 6 hours cycling until I was back in Tromsø.

I found the confluence in a typical swampy area with a ground cover of grass, moss and tiny blueberry plants.

A summary of the trip can be found here.
