#1: Approach 20m (wrong side of hedge!) and 15m on the correct side!

(visited by Paul Phillips)

17-Oct-2004 -- Not so far to travel today to this confluence just 48.8km as the crow flies. Early start though as I want to go shopping and things before a family lunch.

Drive along the A6097 past confluence closest approach from main road is 275m, turn off into Lowdham and park near the railway station change into wellies and head back towards the confluence.

It is still quite dark, mainly because the weather is so overcast although it is still early about 7:45am and there is slight intermittent rain.

I walk from there to the main road until I get to Cottage Pasture Lane, I walk down this and come to a gate. Over the gate and follow the GPS towards the CP, looks as though it is going to be very easy. As I near the CP the distance reduces until I realise I am still going to have some way to go before I meet a rather thick hedge!

20m from the confluence and I can't even see it!! I walk down a hundred metres before deciding I will have to retreat and look for another way into the field where the CP is.

On my walk back I notice another gate this time very overgrown next to the stream that runs down the side of the field with the CP. I step over the barbed wire fence and round the gate and I'm now in the correct field.

A short walk around the edge of the field and I'm now within 15m of the CP. Walk straight into the field (good job I have the wellies!) and I arrive at the point all the zeros achieved and with 3m differential accuracy. Due to the light the shutter speed is slow and the flash is used on the GPS shots. You can see the GPS has updated the direction and the distance to the CP from 0.01m to 0.06m during the exposure although the co-ordinates remained firmly on 53.00000N, 1.00000W.

After taking the required photos I hear large dogs in the field from which I originally came, not wishing to be their early breakfast I decided to find an alternative route out from the field. Walking along the edge of the stream brings you to the pylon and picture 7 from here you can walk down the road back to a gate on to the main road again the gate is at 52.99846N, 0.99506W and even has space enough at the side to walk around so easier way if slightly further than the way I took.

Then on to the next one 52N0.!
