(visited by Thomas Barthel)

15-Jun-2009 -- Continued from 41N 25E.

The confluence point 41N 17E is located in the south east of Italy, at the beginning of the heel of the Italian boot, south of the city Rutigliano. It is easily accessible.

Our big holiday trip from Cyprus to Germany lead us through a hand full of countries. This gave me the opportunity to visit some confluence points. I planned to reach at least one in each country. The third candidate was Italy.

After we reached Italy by ferry boat at Bari, the first way to go was to the confluence point 41N 17E! In the middle of that huge city I draw my GPS and my old map from 2002, hoping that it would help us to get out of that horrible loud and aggressive city. Sorry, but if you are coming from the quiet villages of Greece's west coast and the small harbor city of Igoumenítsa, you will get shocked from Bari, as well as caused by the way Italians drive their cars.

Later on we'd got it and reached Rutigliano from North West. So we had to pass the center of the city, which is really beautiful! After driving along the very narrow one-way roads to the south end of the city, we reached the rusty place-name sign of Rutigliano. There I parked the car, short before this road leads into a bigger one, and walked the last 200 meters towards the CP by passing a field. The CP is situated on an uncultivated field which can be accessed through an old open (again) rusty gate, which shows to the road SP240.

At this field you will find an old lorry, which shows straight to the CP with its opened rear. Maybe three meters away from a concrete fence to the neighbouring field, I started my short confluence dance and did the necessary pictures. After my successful visit we had a nice "caffè lungo" at a city park.

I was very glad to visit my first confluence point in Italy on 15 June 2009. At luck there were further possibilities to visit CPs in this state during our trip. Let's see what the future brings!

Confluence point 45N 11E shall be the next!
