#1: The Confluence

(visited by David Williams)

01-Sep-2022 -- A tale of two confluences.

There is a convenient public car park to the West - where a notice board QR-code leads one to a comprehensive online questionnaire ("Main purpose of visit?") - and a choice of routes to the point - tracks through mature woodland (with birds) or along the forest edge (with views).

The WGS84 point is clearly marked (2005), my watch and satnav both indicated a point a few metres to the east - but with dense overhead cover - accuracy would not be not the best.

My return route along the field/forest edge led me to a monument (2004) indicating that the confluence according to an 1862 Middle Europe datum/coordinate system was some 56.8m south into the field with the GPS point being 170m to the east.

With the two markers being placed within a year of each other I can imagine someone raising a hand during the dedication ceremony "actually you have it in the wrong place..."

It's rare that a confluence point has a monument and rarer such good signposting. I have ~70 visits and I can only think of two with monuments (the most impressive of which of which was built after my visit some 20 years ago... 50N 100E)
