#1: The Confluence from 15 m Distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

11-Nov-2017 -- This is the second out of 3 reports reaching confluence points during a 4-day cycling trip from Rome to Benevente. The story continues from 42°N 13°E.

At noon time I reached the village Casano which is located less than 1 kilometre from the confluence. Casano is – like many other villages in the Abruzzi Mountains – on a hilltop above a steep river valley. Interestingly, the confluence is located on a relatively flat area above the village.

I parked my bicycle 550 m from the confluence at a curve of the little county road to Bosco di Sant’Antonio. Hiking to the confluence was a pleasant stroll westwards, thereby passing the railway tunnel entrance with a former – meanwhile deteriorated - maintenance building.

The confluence itself seems not to be in agricultural use anymore. But this is typical for mountain regions: rural exodus leaves deserted villages and fields behind. The point is now overgrown with grass, moss and scattered bushes and small trees. The confluence area is relatively flat compared to the rugged mountains all around. There are great views towards the west, if standing on the confluence point.

Now I had to decide whether to make a loop southwards or northwards back to Rome. The decision was made spontaneously after I had a look at the weather forecast: it was going to rain in the north and sunny in the south. So I continued cycling over the 1450 m high pass surrounded by the nature reserve Bosco Sant’Antonio. I finished the cycling day in Bojano, far south of the confluence point.
