#1: Confluence from NE with reference plate on tree

(visited by Hans Augdoppler)

09-Sep-2001 -- Coming from Taranto I drove via Foggia, Isernia, Rionero Sannitico and Rivisondoli to Cansano (See Picture 2). I had some problems to cross Isernia and then continued on the SS17 which is in a poor condition up to Rionero Sannitico, exactly up to the border of Regio Abruzzo. At Rivisondoli I turned off and traveled trough an alpine valley with mainly cattle farming towards Cansano. While I planned the trip I was prepared to pass trough a railway tunnel in order to reach the CP. At this place I decided to try an alternative in spite of a steep hill up to the tracks and barking dogs at a premise close to the tunnel entry.

So I passed Cansano and found a road leading to ‘Agencia Agricola’ [pic4.jpg]. First I had a look from uphill of the entry of the Agencia (direction NE). Then I tried to go around and to make an approach from the north. Since there were some natural gas facilties with ‘NO TRESPASSING’ signs I decided to start from east and to cross the hill.

After crossing the hill in direction south west on the right hand side the gas station could be observed. On the left a house can be seen and I walked trough dry grass with a lot of thistle downwards towards the target. Finally the CP determined as to be in a harvested grain field, ~ 90 m from a house. I placed the reference plate about 15 m to east onto a small tree.

Then I went to explore the nearby house, which is in a desolate condition. I should have known it, it was a former maintenance house of the passing railway. A train passed during my stay and I had the chance to make a rest in the shadow. At least this is a very pleasant place and I enjoyed this visit very much. After this I was looking forward to 42°N 13°E as my next visit today.

Note: Do not waste your money to buy a map from ‘Istituto Geografico DeAgostini’. The reality looks a bit different, just the name sounds competent.
