(visited by David Thorne, Bas De Groot and Aart Jongejans)

29-Aug-2008 -- The idea of driving in a straight line from one confluence point to another was now going to be attempted. So 4 cars left CP 25N 48E, but unfortunately Ahmed and his friend wished to leave us once we crossed the Dammām Highway. I think it was a new thing for Ahmed to charge across the desert as fast as possible.

Not long after crossing the highway - well about 10 km up the road - Aart radioed to say he was a bit worried that his Landcruiser was thirsty and we should back track for petrol. This having been done we resumed where we had left the sand and continued on our journey relatively straight north. The GPS track attests to this feat.

The good thing about the second half of the trip was that we got varied terrain, as it was now more rocky as we had left the Dahnā' Dunes area. So the driving was more challenging in that it was varied from rocky to sandy to shale. The art of hitting a CP was now also a bit more attuned and was found much easier.

Kindly the previous visitors had erected a cairn at their point which you will see was pretty close to my reading. A belated brunch was had as it was now 11:30. Aart wasn't too impressed that I had not brought doughnuts for breakfast...
