#1: Fulanis moving towards confluence 13N 7E in the Republic of Niger

(visited by Helmut Resch, Udo Strack and Marian Dube)

07-Oct-2007 -- It was a long, long way till we got to the first Confluence on this trip. Udo, Marian, and myself left Abuja in two Mercedes G's on 6 October at 11:30 a.m. Our intention was to leave early in the morning but the fan belt of Udo's vehicle disintegrated and did some damage. At first it looked like the cylinder head gasket was blown. It was a hard blow to Udo's ego as well, being a mechanic and very particular about his vehicle. He worked on this vehicle for two years and this was the first long trip with his "baby" and then this! The next morning it turned out that only the cooler was damaged.

The repair went swift and we managed to be on the road to Katsina just before midday. Around 6 p.m., very exhausted from the heat and the driving, we reached the JBN camp at Katsina and spent the night at this camp. At the bar the first couple of drinks went in slowly, but then all of a sudden the party started to swing and out came the schnapps and more schnapps. We really had a good time there. The next morning we continued towards the border to Niger to Jibiya and took the road along the border to Zurmi. On this road outside Gurbin-Baure we got as close as 3.1 km to the confluence 13N 7E, this Confluence is in the vicinity of a couple of 100 meters into the Republic of Niger.

To go there and possible get caught could get you into a lot of trouble. In particular since we do not have the right skin colour either. We decided to forget it and continued to the next confluence 13N 6E.

Coordinator's Note: Recent boundary information indicates that this Confluence is inside Nigeria.
