#1: North to Cumberland Parkway

(visited by Cynthia Harrell)

19-Feb-2011 -- There are two major tourist attractions in south-central Kentucky within a stone’s throw of Interstate Highway 65: Mammoth Cave National Park and 37N 86W. [Meaning no offense to the National Corvette Museum near Bowling Green!] With un-seasonably mild weather for mid-February, this was no day to be spent underground, so off I go to the confluence point.

Back around the turn of the century, there was a time it seemed like this point was being visited every other week. (Well, at least the only two visits recorded here were just twelve days apart.) However, after that initial flurry, no one has been back to do a follow-up. With International Confluence Day 2011 looming, this seemed a great place to reconnoiter a possible ICD visit.

I exited I-65 going east on US-68. After passing through Bon Ayr, I again crossed over the Cumberland Parkway, and a few miles later made a turn south on Bishop Road. Bishop Road curves back to the west just before going through a box culvert under the Louie B. Nunn – Cumberland Parkway. Immediately after the underpass, turn southeast (left) on a farm lane that winds towards the point. At the 37th parallel, the only changes in the last ten years are far fewer cows and a new gate. A short walk to the east and I stood on the spot…
