01-Dec-2004 -- When I was told of the "degree confluence project" by a friend, I immediatly took the map of Colombia to find a confluence point, which could be found as easily as possible. Fortunally I found this one ( 73°W 7°N), which is close to Bucaramanga, capital of Santander, where I have lots of friends and which environment is already well known.
Bucaramanga and Piedecuesta, about 14 miles southwards, are placed directly at the border of the western Andes chain of Colombia at an altitude of about 3300 ft. that means that I had to climb up more than 2900 ft. to find my confluence point.
When I started my journey at 10 a clock en the morning, I had perfect weather conditions of 83° and a almost cloudless sky. Actually I had no clue that the route I took, would lead me directly to where I wanted to get. The beautiful landscapes of Santander are doubtless worth of spending some time on a walk. In Colombia, Santander is well kwon because of its great variety of nature
All the people I met on the trail always passed by with a friendly " buenas tardes". A 2 men police patrol on a motorbike assured me that there are no dangers in this aera. Walking up the path I could feel that the temperature dropped and some fresh winds passed by from time to time.
At the precise moment when I realized that the confluence point had to be more or less just where the huge tree stands beside the path, it started to rain. In under 5 min. I got wet to the bones.
Anyway. I was so glad to find the point being directly at the path and not as one should had expected 1 mile up the hill in the middle of a forest.
I just kept on shouting "I did it !!!!"
