30-Jan-2004 -- During our extended `Īdu-l-Aḍḥā holidays of January/February 2004 to Syria, we combined the on-road tour of the archaeologically and culturally rich country with visits to six Confluences (33N 36E, 34N 37E, 36N 39E, 36N 38E, 36N 37E and 35N 37E).

After having crossed a very busy border at Mafraq from Jordan on a chilly Friday morning of 30 January, we headed towards the small village of Qāsim, which was only 3 km from the Confluence, just as the call for the Jum`a (Friday) prayers started.

We joined the congregation in the small village masjid for the Jum`a prayers, and soon we were back on the muddy tracks crisscrossing the countryside. The Confluence was in the middle of a muddy, empty farm field, and to reach it, we had to walk across from a horse farm to get to it. We had to leave our boots off, since at times the mud came right up to the knees!

After a round of delicious shawarmas from the local eatery in al-Samanayn, we headed out to the Confluence 34N 37E, which was on the way towards Tadmur (Palmyra).
