#1: General view showing plantations and the Drakensberg

(visited by Paan Walton and Willemien Walton)

12-Dec-2003 -- The degree confluence point lies just off road R535 from Hazyview in the lowveld to Graskop on the escarpment. The road winds up the Drakensberg, showing off some of the finest scenery including the beautiful Kowyn's Pass. The area is covered with bluegum and pine trees providing the papermills of SAPPI.

The confluence spot was tracked off the road down a steep decline. To find the spot the contour roads were followed (see photo #7 for the actual GPS tracking). Between the contours the gradient was quite steep and the ground very loose and slippery. Willemien had a nasty fall when she lost her footing following me. The plantation was still young and did not affect the GPS signals.
