#1: Vue vers le Nord - Toward North

(visited by Bruno Girard and Colonel Walker)

English

14-Sep-2003 -- On September 14th, 2003 at 6:47 am I left, together with the colonel Walker, for my sixth confluence for the four weeks. It is about the closest second confluence from my home (N48 ° 26 ' 07.1", W71 ° 13 ' 42.6").

A team had already tempted the expedition in snowmobiles and had to turn back in front of the strong thickness of snow accumulating on the massif of monts Valin. The snow can regularly reach more than 6 meters in thickness.

I make a brief stop in a restaurant at Saint-Honoré to have breakfast at 7:16 am. I leave 30 minutes later at 7:46 am in the direction of Saint-David-de-Falardeau and of the ZEC Onatchiway-est. I reaches the barrier of the ZEC where it is necessary to pay a right of access at 8:26 am. The coordinates of this barrier are: N48 ° 53 ' 42.0", W71 ° 01 ' 45.2".

After a small "jasette" with Anne who will welcome you with the smile, I resumes the road. About nine kilometers more in the North, we have to turn to the left ( Secteur Ross) on a road which, beyond the river "Tête-Blanche" (White head), becomes impracticable for my car. It is 8:57 am and I am 4,39 km of the confluence.

It is then that I take out a mountain bike of the back boot and I make still two kilometers northward then 1 kilometer towards the southwest up to a camp. I crossed a big brook then prefers to continue in feet in a path of ATV. It is 9:36 am (N48 ° 58 ' 23.3", W70 ° 59 ' 51.2") in 2,99 km of the objective.

I embark some clothes, cards of the sector, my GPS and my compass, some foods and the colonel Walker in my pack and begins the ascent from a hill to the lake "du Marteau" (Hammer) (N48 ° 59 ' 36.3", W71 ° 00 ' 15.5") which I reach at 10:57 am. I am now 0,8 km of the confluence.

Then I go along the lake on the bank is in full wood until its release, in 0,43 km of the confluence. It is then 11:20 am. I cross an old wooden dam and go following a brook up to the lake "des Quartiers" which I reach at 11:32 am. I am right by my objective but I can again approach it by following the lake.

At 11:41 am I cannot be closer while being on the edge of the lake (in a small swamp in fact), to N48 ° 59 ' 56.7", W70 ° 59 ' 58.7". Height: 492 meters. Before pushing me in wood in the compass, I decide to eat and to drink a little bit so that to offer a good meal to the numerous black flies among whom it is the realm.

At 11:55 am I leave on 110 meters with the compass adjusted to 345 °. A small easy walking which! At 12:10 am, all the zeros are in place on the GPS. Nothing distances itself in these wood and I attach long orange-colored ribbons to a branch of birch to mark the confluence.

THE END OF A COLONEL

The colonel Walker, always also "cow boy" at his hours decides then to climb on the top of the birch. Badly took it to him because he gets entangled in ribbons and finishes his confluence hunter's career hung on coordinates N49 ° 00 ' 00.0", W71 ° 00 ' 00.0". He would not have been able to wish the better end. I hope that the future guests will know how to show him the respect which it deserves.

At 12:18 am I already have to abandon him(it) and at 1:31 pm I am in my bike. At 1:55 pm I take the car and I belong to Saint-David-de-Falardeau at 3:00 pm. At 3:29 pm I am at home.
