English narrative

09-Mar-2003 -- This time we have big ideas about two CP points conquest at once, 56N 40E and 56N 39E, located in the adjacent Vladimirskaya oblast’. As a result of the nine-hour travel we surmounted 370 km and subdued both! The track and timing of our way there from Moscow and back is in the picture 2.

We calculated that the far point from Moscow shouldn’t be difficult for searching. It is situated near Moscow-Vladimir highway, in the middle between small towns Lakinsk and Sobinka. We anticipated taking photos near the sign with expressive Russian name Khrenovo.

For second point we expected a problem as it lies so remote from the road in the forest. The quality of local Vladimir roads misgived us.

Early Sunday morning we set out. We had timed our journey by the holiday “The Day of Geodesy and Cartography Workers” which celebrated in Russia annually on the second Sunday of March. (badge image in the picture 3).

Our way ran to the east to Lakinsk city in the Vladimir area. Formerly this road called Vladimir post road, and convicts were condemned to penal servitude in Siberia along it. The irony of it is that now the part of this road within Moscow named the Highway of Enthusiasts.

Highway M-7 was in good condition and we achieved Lakinsk in two hours. On the way we don’t forget to pull up at the city of Petushki known by the writer Venedict Yerofeev and his immortal work “Moscow – Petushki”. (picture 4).

Lakinsk and Sobinka are two small towns in the Vladimir area joined textile specialization. They are located in 35 km from the regional center Vladimir. Lakinsk lasts along the highway and Sobinka is in 3.5 km to the south on the right coast of Klyazma river.

Formerly in these places was ancestral Souvorov’s Lands near Undol river. Known commander and future generalissimo of Russian army Alexander Souvorov lived here from 1784 till 1786 an interval between two victorious turkish campaigns.

In 1920th years Sobinka wear a revolutionary name “Comvanguard” by name the textile factory "Communist Vanguard". Now this factory called "Sobitex" and made the working cloth - jackets, overalls and so forth.

City of Lakinsk (Lakinsky village till 1969) is named by local revolutionary Lakin perished in 1905. The city is renowned for old spinning-textile factory «Lakinskaya textile mill» (114 years old) and the brewery. The local natural water Undolskaya is considered one of the best in Russia. The "Lakinskoe” beer (Picture 5) and Russian softdrink KVASS is derived from it.

As we discovered soon, it was better to reach the point not from Khrenovo but from Sokolniki village from south. It located on opposite coast from Sobinka at crease of Klyazma river. To our happiness, the road has not get soaked yet and we could get to the point for a distance 400 meters. We deduced from the map that our CP had to get into water or, to put it more precisely, on ice.

Actually the point has got on the island overgrowned with shrubs and located precisely in the middle of a gulf. In the summer we probably would need a boat, but now we easily reach it on ice (Picture 6).

Followed the tradition we performed a confluence dance in bushes, then we found a place of our CP (Picture 7) as accurately as possible. We had to determine how far we were from real CP with coordinates 56 00 00.00N and 40 00 00.00E. For that we used hybrid of the GPS receiver with PDA computer GeoExplorer CE, described us at previous point 55N 39E. We got onto the point and collected a short 5-minute file (picture 8).

At home we processed our file using data from reference station in Moscow and available program for postprocessing. The actual CP position (see PC screen in Picture 9) proved to be 2 meter away from the place of recording. Taking into consideration that the Horizontal Precision is 0.5 meter, we estimated the total positional accuracy 3 meter.

Then we hurried on the second scheduled point (the reference 56N 39E) to be in time until dark (Picture 10).
