#1: Looking east towards Mt. Kenya.

(visited by Alan Torrigino)

13-Jun-2002 -- A bit of off-track driving and some negotiation with the resident farmers allows us to document the fact that we truly did stand on the equator!

Francis, our wonderful guide from Discover Kenya managed to get the Land Cruiser within one kilometer of the site. He then facilitated the discussion with the two land owners who’s barb wire fences we needed to cross. This successful negotiation then allowed us to traverse two "pastures" and reach the location. In this dry farming region off the slopes of Mt. Kenya, the farmers were protective of their property and suspicious of our endeavors.

After much repeated explanation, many reassuring smiles and some hands-on experience with the GPS, the farmers were willing to join in on the discovery of 0-37E and, in the end, even joined in on the picture!
