(visited by Henrik Sunden)

29-Jun-2002 -- This is one of four confluences visited or tried during a 1402 km cycle tour on north Iceland.

This day I started from a shelter at 600 m elevation on Hellisheidi, where I had been forced to stay overnight by rain, fog and extremely strong winds. I passed Vopnafjördur town by noon and continued cycling on the road to Thorshöfn until I was 3.6 km north of the confluence point.

The fog had disappeared during the day and the weather was becoming better. I put up the tent just beside the road and started walking south, uphill. Reached 66Nx15W after 1 hour and 20 minutes walk, at 21:00, just as the sun was breaking through the fog in the northwest.

The confluence point is at 266 m elevation, the vegetation type is arctic tundra, no trees, mostly mosses and lichens on the ground, some areas quite barren soil, signs of permafrost. Golden plovers were singing. Mountain Blafjöll (Blue mountain), 368 m, had just the right name. In the north I could see Langanes peninsula, highest point there is Gunnolfsvikurfjall, 729 m. Walked back in 1 hour 15 minutes and had a meal before sleep.
