#1: 67Nx20E, wiew towards the west and Stuor-Hapsas mountain

(visited by Henrik Sunden)

21-Jun-2002 -- 2002-06-21. Left Boliden at 05:30 and drove 310 km north to Porjus and then some 10 km further east on road no 45. Bueatiful morning. The longest day of the year, above the arctic circle there is 24 hours of sunlight. A dirt road led some hundred meters towards the south, where a footpath leading to the old famous Rallastigen tourist and transport footpath from the late 19th century and early 20th century.

Rallarstigen started in Gällivare and tourists walked to the boat landing at Luspebryggan for a tour to the Swedish mountains, and carried loads were transported to the Porjus hydropower station works. The heaviest man-carried load was 101 kg, payment for this about 50 km transport was 50 Swedish öre per kg. Muliply by 50 to 100 to have the equivalence of today's öre. 100 öre = 1 Krona approximately = 10 US cents today.

I crossed the Rallarstigen footpath and walked across bogs 1.5 km. About 10 Wood sandpipers nested on the bog and called. Many, many gadflies and some mosquitoes tried to bite me.

The confluence is located about 500 m east of the border to Muddus National Park (inside it) just north of the bog, in an northerly type of forest, with spruces and birches, not very dense. I arrived at the spot at 11:30 and took photos of GPS WGS coordinates and wiews of the four directions.

Walked back to the car through the forest, saw Tengmalm's owl, Hawk owl (both very close, 10 m), Brambling warning for owl, 2 Willow grouses.

I checked the GPS's opinion about the sun's rising and setting times. It said --:--.

On the way back to Boliden (at about 65 degrees N) I stopped at the Arctic circle 8 km south of Jokkmokk. The GPS said the sun would rise at 20:05 and set at 05:25. Some irregularity in the program.

I saw 1 moose and about 50 reindeer along road 45 between Porjus and Arvidsjaur.

Home again at 16:15.
