#1: The confluence in the middle of the picture behind the trees

(visited by Donald Staal and Monique Van der Hulst)

04-Apr-2002 -- We thought that the best way to come close to this confluence by car was to leave the main road at Bouboukas (a tiny village). According to our map, there should be a dirt road leading uphill from this village to another small village named Kouteli. Indeed, we found a dirt road that was going uphill, and we followed it for about one kilometre. The road was totally unsuitable for normal cars and we nearly wrecked ours (rocks were scraping the bottom), so we decided to park the car at about 2 kilometres from the confluence and continue on foot. Luckily we did not drive any further, because otherwise we wouldn’t have been able to return. The road was winding but generally going in the right direction.

Soon we could see a small solitary church that could not be far from the confluence, which suggested that there was another road (but not necessarily; in Greece you can find churches at strange and inaccessible places). We followed the road until we were at about 400 metres from the confluence and climbed uphill through some shrubs. When we arrived on the top of the hill we could see some sheep and a small village at about 500 metres! This was possibly Kouteli and if it was we could have saved ourselves a lot of trouble by leaving the main road earlier and parking there… The confluence was between the trees on a steep slope at an altitude of about 1060 metres. We left a twig in the ground to mark the spot.
