#1: the confluence right on the road!

(visited by Rodrigo Stulzer and Eduardo Valduga)

16-Feb-2002 -- My brother-in-law and I were planning to reach a confluence and this Saturday we attempted one near Curitiba (aprox. 57Km from downtown).

We traveled by car from Curitiba to Colombo and Bocaiuva do Sul. The road was a good paved one and we were enjoying the trip listening to music and talking about the trip we are planning to Bolivia and Peru.

The road became unpaved and we discovered that lots of guys and machines decided to work on that Saturday to pave the road. We enconter lots of "caterpillars" on the road and had to keep in line a couple of times because of the workers.

When we were around 10km from the confluence we reached a crossroad and we saw a very old house that was almost falling due to age. The house today serves as a bar to the locals.

We took the crossroad and continued through a very bad road with lots of rocks and mud in it. We were around 5km from the confluence and started to think that maybe the confluence could be exactly at the road; what a luck on my first confluence attempt it could be!

And then we were 3km, 2km and then 1km from the waypoint and the sign in my GPS continued to point to the road ahead. Dudu was tracking the distance left and when we were just 200 meters from the confluence I realized that I was correct, the point was just in the road; it was very easy to get there!

After taking some pictures, Dudu had the idea to do a big banner showing the latitude and longitude of the confluence. We look for something white and big in the car and found a piece of sun-protector. We rapdly started drawing the 25S and 49W numbers with a pen. I saw it from some distance to see if the camera could get the numbers but we had to put more colors in the banner. Dudu resolved the problem getting some tree-leaves and started to paint the banner! At the end we got a very cool banner with green-leaves numbers in it!

We asked to a guy that was walking to take a picture of us with the banner and took other picture of the GPS but that one did not work out because it got out of focus ;-(

When we were coming back we started to discuss about the guy that is building that road and we wonder if the engineers put the road exactly in the confluence or it was just by accident?

Hmm, probably we will never know.

See ya in the next attempt!

Rodrigo e Dudu
