#1: Looking at the confluence from the west.

(visited by Robert Collier, BJ Collier, Betty Hardwick and Nolan Hardwick)

06-Sep-2001 -- On September 6, 2001 I, my wife and her parents traveled from Hobart, Oklahoma to the 37N 99W confluence. We departed Hobart and drove US Highway 183 north until we reached the town of Seiling, OK. From there we took Highway 281 north to Highway 64. We turned west on 64 and drove till I found NS 223 road. As I turned north we found the road to be paved but within 6 miles it turned into a dirt and gravel road. This road appeared to be running through a private ranch. The countryside in this area is hilly with deep gorges (see picture #6) I believe were made many years back. We continued north on this winding dirt road for about 5 miles when we came to a tee in the road (see picture #7). Because I had marked the confluence 37N 99W on my GPS we knew to turn to the east. In another 3 miles we came upon the very place that was visible from the aerial photograph.

It is best described by a left hook in the road turning to the north and the road also going straight and becoming "Hackberry Road". We turned north at this intersection and stopped because we were at 37N.

We quickly found the confluence (see picture #1) by use of the GPS and I was able to walk to the exact point after climbing over just one fence by the road. The confluence was measured as being 22 yards from the north-south road and 48 steps from the east-west road ("Hackberry Road"). There is a sign post at this road intersection with the north-south being labeled Barber Co. on one side of the pole and Commanche Co. on the other north-south side of the pole. The east-west sign label is Hackberry road. Looking at a road map of Kansas, USA we see that those two counties are in the state of Kansas, so we assume that the confluence is also in Kansas since it is North and a bit East of the sign.

Located to the west is a group of buildings (house, grain storage, and three metal buildings). There is a Conservation Farm sign at the road. There is also a small private airport.

This was probably the easiest confluence to find and get to of all that I have tried to visit. We drove to within 22 yards of the confluence point.
