#1: View north from the confluence at 34 N 95 W

(visited by Lee McQuigg)

04-Jun-2001 -- It looked like the confluence at 34N 95W would not be too hard to document. It hadn't been "bagged" yet, so I thought it would be worth the trip. I left Tulsa Oklahoma Monday June 4, 2001 at about 11:00AM for the 3 hour drive south through "green country." The temperature was in the high 80's F. Indeed the countryside was very green due to the recent rains. As you head south through eastern Oklahoma the trees go from the scrub oak variety to pine trees. Cattle ranching is the predominant use of the land.

The rivers were full and the water muddy. My route was south on US 75 connecting to the Indian Nations Turnpike. At Hugo Oklahoma, US 70 east was taken to the town of Millerton, Oklahoma, the nearest town to the confluence. A section road just east of Millerton heads north very close to the 95w-longitude line. About 1.5 miles from US 70 is the confluence. I stopped there and got out to zero in on it when a friendly guy stopped to ask if I had car trouble. A quick explanation about the confluence seemed to satisfy him and away he went. The actual confluence was about 15 feet east of the fence line. Inside the fence were a few curious cows. I squeezed under the fence to take pictures of the GPS and surrounding area. Upon returning back to the "confluence mobile" I reviewed the GPS shot and noticed that when I snapped the picture the latitude figure had moved to 34 00.001N, darn! So back under the fence for another try. Finally success!
