10-Jul-2017 -- Verschätzt

Pferde, Weite, Wellblech.

= (Mongolei-)Reisenden-Anfänger-Fehler: Trau keiner Reise-know-how Karte.

Faktenblatt:

  • Name: Mongolischer Neubausiedlungsvorgarten
  • Abstand zur Straße: 28 m
  • Nächster erreichter Punkt: 28 m
  • Genauigkeit: 3 m
  • Topographie: Vorort
  • Wetterlage: gewittrig
  • Meereshöhe: 1331 m
  • Lokale Uhrzeit: 12:59

10-Jul-2017 -- Long day Mongolian offroad

Horses, vastness, corrugated tracks. Seven confluences in Mongolia during Nadaam festival.

Long trip since we left Germany we finally made it to Mongolia. Only 240 kilometres left from Ulan Ude at Lake Baikal to the border at Altan Bulag. So the long time expected adventure could start directly.

One of Mongolia's most important Buddhist monasteries is not far off. Translation for Amarbayasgalant Monastry is "Monastery of Tranquil Felicity". For us this means: A little stretch off-road at awesome landscape and then again excellent tarmac.

This is why we quickly reached Erdenet. The last confluence visit in 2004 shows the vastness of the steppe. We found it placed in the middle of a new suburb. It is located in a front yard of a newly build house. Mongolia's second largest city is growing fast: The local copper and molybdenum deposits are creating many jobs, as Google Earth shows, but also a large tailings lake at the opposite side of the town.

We aimed to reach Ulaanbaatar the same evening, because the next day Nadaam festival started. "A little sightseeing detour of 500 kilometers we should manage easily." This idea turned out as a common (Mongolia) beginner’s mistake: Don’t trust the Reise-know-how map. We better would have taken the direct route. Tarmac ends after Bulgan and tracks are bad. In the middle of the night we reached the main access road. Judging by the oncoming traffic, Ulaanbaatar is now deserted. At Oasis camp, on the other hand, it is crowded. Everybody moved a few millimetres so we could squeeze in between the gate and some trucks. Everybody coming behind had to stay outside.
