13-Sep-2015 – In the second week of September the stars aligned at last.

First, in the forests of the region the mushrooms were seen! Eyewitnesses claimed to have seen birch and aspen boletuses.

Second, the weather apparently decided to compensate the Petersburgers for the damage caused by its summer coldness. September really pleased so far. And for the weekend forecasters promised a relentless sun. Staying home was absolutely impossible.

And third, a hundred kilometers from home the unvisited 60°N 32°E has been brewed for years gaining confluent aroma and strength. And looks like it was ready.

So it was decided to combine pleasure with another pleasure and one more pleasure and to spend – ain’t afraid of such words – “the weekend in nature”.

On Saturday afternoon we drove by overloaded Murmansk highway towards the various picnic amenities which were reached in the evening. Mushroom harvest naturally migrated on Sunday morning.

Getting up a few hours later than it was scheduled we spent another couple of hours on leisurely breakfast and packing. Then we drove unhurriedly towards the village of Kipuya that is located on the highway R21 “Kola” at the junction with the road N49 confident that our mushrooms will wait for us. It was there – near 60°N 32°E – we planned to devote ourselves to thoughtful gathering.

We moved as has been said without haste. And even stopped on the way to check the promising forests. So we turned to Kipuya from the “Kola” already in the afternoon. The usual village – there's nothing remarkable if not the road going through it. Shortly after the exit from the highway the asphalt gives way to picturesque cobblestone pavement. Yeah, picturesque, but extremely uncomfortable. After the village a kilometer more we crawled on the dirt road leading to Chaplino. At N59°58,8216' E32°00,6626' we turned right to the forest. Its dark stripe stretched over the wide meadow parallel to the road.

We parked the car in a field about a kilometer from the confluence. Armed with the buckets and knives and were to enter the forest. But immediately we were hampered by drainage ditches. They were connected with each other and were quite broad and unusually deep for a dry September. In one place we were separated from the opposite bank with the three meters of water. We had to spend another half an hour on searching for the bypass where the ditches narrowed to an acceptable width.

At last we were in the forest but under its arches the other thorns concealed. The local population of deer flies was extremely high. My dearest wife being in difficult relations with all arthropods hasty retreated to the car. Dogs also decided that they feel more comfortable in an open field. Well, I had to meet Lipopténa cérvi closer and the next couple of hours I was a shelter for a considerable amount of them. I must say it was a surprise that those things bite too.

The forest where I left my companions was very compact and soon I came out. Before me a wide clearing for power lines lay and behind it was a real wood where the confluence waited for me. The next obstacle wasn’t long to wait. The strip of forest adjacent to the clearing was a sheer windfall. I had to sweat and swear before I could find in this natural abatis the narrowest place and move in azimuth. But as I tried to collect mushrooms on my way my “azimuth” trajectory was a little bit intricate.

In 10 minutes suddenly I came out to another wide cutting. I had not seen it on the satellite images. And no wonder. It was brand new and judging to close roaring of heavy machinery it was increasing in size right now. Across the cutting there were parallel causeways made from forest waste. Not sure for what purpose – to avoid getting stuck or to keep the fertile soil layer. But I must admit that the topsoil was almost not affected by the wheels and caterpillars.

The causeways went in proper direction. When they came up against the yet not cut forest there were about 350 m. And here the nature seemed desperate to stop me and decided to use the extreme weapon – psychological.

On the soft fat ground the deep and fearsome footprints appeared. The footprints differed in size and shape but a kind of system still was in them. This didn’t allow me to write it off as a work of the wild Piglets. Although after the recent adventure in Poland I had no lust to meet with them either. With my ranger “skills” I could easily recognize in these prints a moose or wolf or – Lord forbid! – a bear with a cub.

As soon as I convinced myself that the footprints were left by someone not very hostile and long ago, nearby branches cracked. It was unprecedented! Behind me the engine was rumbling clearly and these guys were walking here. Again it crackled noisily and 30 meters away something black and big slipped. Exactly where I headed.

I stopped. Then turned around and took few steps towards the clearing. Stopped again.

“Noway! I’m not leaving without a trophy!” I took right and skirting the dangerous place by a large radius continued to move towards the goal. The stick in my hand and the loud singing of the imperishable Rammstein masterpieces helped me keep the spirit.

Soon mixed spruce-aspen forest abruptly gave way to pine one and the moss began to spring under my feet. A couple of hundred meters, another ditch and I was on the spot. In all directions the sparse light pine forest stretched completely covering the dry swamp. Excellent well! Thanks swamp loggers will not get here for some more time and the mooses or whatever will continue to scare the walkers. Funny thing – few meters from my zero coordinates the animal skull was posing on a broken trunk. The mark of an anonymous confluenter?

On the way back I met nothing more worthy of my outstanding bravery. Only fat brown hare which jumped out right in front of me managed to test it for strength a little. But I pulled myself together and even recalled that I had a camera. The hare was not scared – just didn’t want me to step on him. He sat down behind the trees five meters away and waited this fool finally to get away from his possessions. I did not dare to test his patience. Who knows what can hares do to defend their territory? ))

Finally I could devote myself fully to the quiet hunt and was rewarded for it. The tiny aspen wood gave me a lot of pleasant moments! So I overcame the windfall like a tightrope walker balancing with full buckets of red boletuses.

I crossed the windfall and power lines clearing in a slightly different place and came to the fresh road laid down by the loggers. Walking along it I circled a “fly” forest and by a slight detour went back to my crew who tired of waiting me.

The GPS showed that in total with all the detours and dodging the one kilometer car-spot distance stretched into six and a half kilometers, mostly through a forest. If I would not be interested in the mushrooms than because of the loggers and their new road I could shorten the forest part – and in fact the whole walking part – to the 400 m in one direction.
