10-Jan-2014 -- This Confluence was conquered in the first onslaught in January 10, 2014.

This report is the first of three that we put together to describe our adventure to conquer three confluences never before visited.

With the approaching weekend, convinced a few friends to make a motorcycle expedition to conquer a few more confluences in the States of Bahia and Piauí.

After a quick consultation of the site confluence.org, we select the confluences 9ºS 41ºW, 9ºS 42ºW, and 10ºS 43ºW, all located in rural region with low population density and no access by paved roads. As we only had three days to accomplish our goal, we drew the shortest route, seeking to focus on the main points of interest on the route.

Script outline, bikes and riders ready, took off from Salvador towards the town of Sobradinho, Bahia, where it is the largest artificial lake in the world, with about 320 km long, a water mirror surface of 4,214 km² and a storage capacity of 34.1 billion cubic meters. While cruising the lake it is possible to observe the sluice, owned by Companhia Docas do Estado da Bahia, whose Chamber has 120 m long by 17 wide allowing boats to overcome the gap of 32.5 meters created by the dam, thus guaranteed the continuity of traditional navigation between the excerpt of the São Francisco River between the cities of Pirapora, Minas Gerais, and Juazeiro/BA.

After some photos of the dam and its surroundings, we follow towards the junction of BR235 and shortly thereafter left the paved road onto a dirt road leading to villages in Bahia Barra e Poço de Pedra.

After covering just over 30 km by dirt roads, the sunset has approached and we haven't located the confluence 9°S 41°W. We arrived at farm Barreiro headquarters, owned by Mr. Adão Alves da Silva, who received us and guided us on the paths that could lead us to our first goal of the expedition.

Leaving the farm headquarters behind, move on, traveling by stinging amid Caatinga shrub, crossing through some Gates until a about 1.8 m tall and with wires too close to each other, which separated us from so longed for Confluence. So close and yet so far from the conquest, as it was already getting dark and there was no more time to seek another path, we decided to jump the fence, far from easy task for whoever was wearing jeans and rigid boots biker. But the will to win was stronger than adversity.

Jump the infamous fence and walked toward the Confluence using two GPS devices. At that moment, the Sun was on the horizon and the darkness began to take care of the environment. Hasten the step and, while there was light, quickly took the photos according to the checklist of the Degree Confluence Project.

The Confluence 9°S 41°W is located at farm Barreiro. The surrounding terrain is flat, with predominant vegetation of grasses probably used for cattle or goats. West of the Confluence and very close to the fence, there is a small watering hole for animals. For future visits, we recommend crossing the dam and follow toward the village of Poço de Pedra that lies West of the confluence and then return. Instead of trying to access the confluence the hard way we did, to the southeast of the confluence, inside of the caatinga and having to jump the fence.

Mission accomplished, and with flashlights in hand, we began the search for our motorcycles that had left deep in the Woods, on the other side of the fence. The detail is that we made a serious mistake, because we hadn't marked in GPS the location where we left the bikes and the GPS tracklog was disabled. Which choke to find the bikes!

But, thanks to the reflective stickers of the bikes, with the aid of flashlights, we were able to locate them. We follow towards the point where we jumped the fence, made one more juggling to transpose within nearly 2 m tall, had a good drink of water, climb on the bikes and, amid the darkness of the night, in the jungle enhanced through the woods that covered the sky, we went to the headquarters of the farm of Mr Adão, who awaited us distressed because of the high incidence of snakes in the region.

Arriving at the farm headquarters, we said our goodbyes and headed straight for the city of Casa Nova already thinking on delicacy that we would enjoy at dinner: goat on the tile.

That wonderful day, will be in our memories the adversity we've been through to achieve this confluence.

Tomorrow has more...
