21-Feb-2011 -- On my way back from Paris towards the south of Belgium, I leave the A4 highway to visit the confluence 49N-3E. Easy to find, with small nice roads which pass by Saint-Jean-Les-Deux-Jumeaux, Armentières-en-Brie and Isles-les-Meldeuses. I like all these odd names of villages typical from the French countryside!

The confluence 49N-3E is on an island in the middle of the Marne River. Fortunately, a bridge passes over and it is very easy to reach the island. The point is in fact right at the edge of water, under the trees. The bank is a little steep and the edge of water is very muddy, but after 2 minutes, I can get all the zeros on my GPS without falling behind into the mud.

There is dam just upstream of the island and an old hydraulic plant near to the point on the west side.

The bridge is very narrow, just for the passage of a car. On the east side of the river, one can see that high flows have recently eroded the bank.

If you want to compare the site with the past, you can find interesting old photographs on a website of the local Community

An interesting place to visit. And moreover, the weather was almost nice!
