15-May-2010 --

15-May-2010 --

With the winter solstice only five weeks away, the days shorten very fast at these southerly latitudes. We wanted to visit a few more confluences, but we didn't have many more days of acceptable weather ahead. Our hunting instinct encouraged us to plan an expedition, without a 4x4 wheel drive and without male support.

We left Esquel city all by ourselves, since our co-equippers did not have their weekend free, on Saturday 15th, May 2010 around 10:00 pm. heading south. We spent some time at Gobernador Costa and a couple of ranches, and finally we took a non-paved section of National Route 40, dodging guanacos and visiting Apeleg Village.

We reached Alto Río Senguer in the province of Chubut, Argentina, when it was getting dark. From this town were the very famous creoles horses Gato and Mancha that left Buenos Aires on April 23th, 1925 reaching New York in three years and a half. The region's main production is cattle, and it has beautiful lakes and rivers suitable for fly fishing.

We did some last-minute shopping, we took the last photos of the day, then stayed at a hotel. The distance between Esquel and this place didn’t allow us visit the confluence and return home on the same day, at least not during autumn season, almost winter.

We informed Mr Pocho Freidor that we had arrived, we met him through Adolfo Turcato, with whom we met the next morning, around 09:30. He would guide us to a padlocked gate and he would open it for us. When we explained to him the exact point we wanted to achieve, he looked at our humble Fiat Palio, with a sincere expression of pity in his eyes.

He assured us that with "that" we could not drive too far through the existing tracks, but he generously offered himself to drive us as near as possible, with his 80's Ford pick-up. We followed him to the ranch facilities, a small cattle farm as he himself named it, we left our small car there and went on with Mr. Pocho, who showed off the experience owned by someone who was born and bred in this area, passing through screeds and crossing ditches. We stopped in front of a fence and he announced that he would be taking a nap while we performed our duties.

To successfully achieve the confluence 45° S 71° W it took us an hour walk back and forth, barely hindered by the typical shrub vegetation of the Patagonian plateau.

We reached the point at 11 am, as the day was rather cloudy, neither cold nor windy.

After a toast and photos with our guide, we returned to Esquel, having covered almost 800 kms in less than 48 hours. We are really very happy with our new achievement.
