#1: The spot

(visited by Stephan Theriault)

09-Feb-2007 -- Taking our leave from our camping spot at a recreation area South east of Barraba we went West on a dirt road that proved quite interesting. Out of the blue appeared this huge abandoned building, which is a part of a disaffected asbestos mining complex. The whole thing was fenced off so we couldn't investigate any further. There was a huge eagle on a mount of dirt and I reckoned he had claimed the old mine site as his territory.

An hour later, we came to a bitumen road and veered North on it as we got to Bundarra. Soon we reached another dirt road and drove West on it as it took us ever closer to the confluence. We came to a locked gate by a house and I talked to a lady who held the key, literally. She said she knew about the DCP and that someone had done that confluence a few years ago and she didn't mind me having a go as well.

I got the key and we drove a bit closer to the spot. About 250 metres from it to be precise. Even though we were close it wasn't that easy. The terrain was very steep and rocky. There were large boulders I had to go around and for a little while I was all over the shop but I finally managed to get there and it must have taken me a good half hour.

The next confluence is one that has not yet been done successfully. Actually a few guys did get there but their camera batteries went flat. I'll be sure to learn from their mistake at 29S 151E
