English Narrative

12-Sep-2006 -- During my Kareliya car trip, when I was returning from the Ondozero Lake to the M18 highway, I noticed that the N64 E34 Confluence Point was nearby. The Confluence Point was to the right of me, past some railroad tracks and a pine forest. The total distance was less than 2 kilometers. Even though I had only an hour until sunset, I still gambled on this CP.

I parked my car close by the N64°01.218' E033°59.757' point, then crossed over the railway tracks (photo #6), jumped a ditch with water and started hiking through the pine forest, which had a lot of lingonberry plants. First I followed some use-trails, and then veered off into the bush, which was fortunately very sparse and easily navigable. My pace was pretty good. I noticed that I was constantly turning right when I was not looking at my compass. I then came across a swampy creek with sedge grass and short birch trees, and crossed it by stepping on tussocks.

Soon I came onto an abandoned dirt road. The road looked pretty nice, but soon I discovered a garbage dump on the shoulder (photo #7).
Generally speaking, the "Russian North" is rather littered. Typically, a lot of litter is left around temporary summer fishing camps and car camps. Also there is a lot of garbage dumped on road shoulders of forest roads near almost all the settlements. You can spot quite a few empty beer bottles and cans on any road (for example on the Engozero station - Gridino village road). Apparently they are just thrown out of car windows.

As I was walking on the road, I came upon a few black grouses, but scared them away. They flew from me, and landed further up the road. Soon I scared away the same black grouses once again.
I heard dogs barking behind me. They were probably game hunters' dogs.

I turned right from this road and went down into a hollow with sparse pine trees. There I came upon a narrow ditch. I followed the left bank of this ditch for a while, and then went directly to the Confluence Point. Almost near the Confluence Point, I jumped one more ditch with peat moss colored water (photo #8; red mark on the map close by the CP, photo #10). The dogs were still barking near the road - they were probably sniffing my tracks.

Finally I reached the Confluence Point, which was located right between old ruts left by the threads of an off-road vehicle. Right at the point there was also a diminutive looking little pine tree. I hung my GPS on the tree (photo #5) and took the required photos. The view westward captured the faint orange glow of the sunset (photo #1).

I did not follow my tracks when returning, but tried finding an easier route. I had to cross three ditches, but the going was still pretty easy. Before leaving the hollow, I came upon a small knoll with five porcini mushrooms "belyi grib" (photo #9).

At one point, I noticed a lake to the right of the road. Someone had constructed a path towards it, but I decided to get past the lake and then turn right. Fortunately enough, pretty soon I spotted another overgrown road leading to the right, and turned onto it. At this point I heard two loud shotgun shots - most likely the hunters had caught up to some fowl. Soon I had to cross the same swampy creek as on the way to the Confluence Point. This creek was the biggest obstacle between the road and the Confluence Point. Nevertheless, I managed this trip in my city shoes.
It might be possible to drive closer to the Confluence Point from the M18 highway using this forest dirt road (photo #10, Google maps).

I had no desire to jump the last ditch near the railroad tracks. I turned left, towards the railroad station, and crossed the ditch and railroad there. Small birch trees were growing between the cross-ties of an abandoned railway track, which was located near the new one. In five minutes I was at my car enjoying tea from a thermos bottle.
