#1: View of the confluence

(visited by Leon Wende)

01-Aug-2006 -- My wife and I were planning an outback trip along the Ann Beadell Highway and I noticed that by detouring only 50km or so north from Neale Junction along the Connie Sue Highway we could drive to within a few kilometres of this confluence point. This detour, plus the very remoteness of the region, meant that we would need to take two jerry cans of extra fuel with us.

We camped overnight in the dunes, planning to set out for the point first thing in the morning.

Reaching the point itself required a 6km round-trip walk through spinifex covered dunes and light scrub, accompanied enthusiastically by Kieran (our chocolate labrador).

Due to the area's remoteness, being on my own and not knowing what lay ahead, I carried a first- aid pack in addition to water and food, and kept in touch every 15 minutes via UHF radio with Sarah-Jane who waited in the car. We also carried an HF radio in case of a serious emergency.

On the way back from the point I decided to walk along the spine of one of the sand dunes. Although this was a longer path, I found it afforded easier walking and also allowed me to maintain radio contact (whereas previously being below the dune had often blocked it).

As this was my very first visit to a confluence point I found I was quite excited to reach it, especially after all the planning and trip preparations that preceded and enabled this visit.
