English narrative

02-Jul-2005 -- Following the 56th parallel after having achieved points 56N-32E and 56N-31E we approached 56N-33E.

The point 56N-33E is situated 7 km to the East from the road Nelidovo-Bely in the South-West of Tverskaya Oblast in the spacious swampy deciduous forests and the prospect of getting it during summer time without a helicopter or a land-rover could seem doubtful. Nevertheless, the visit to this point has come about, though from the third attempt. First, we managed only to determine the way how to get over these 7 km. Some maps show the line of narrow-gauge railroad passing only 500-700 m by the point (pic 6). Last autumn our reconnaissance has shown that rails and railroad ties have disappeared and instead of the railroad there is a road used by tractors. This gave us a chance to make use of bicycles on the approach (pic 9).

The next time, in July, we started with the car laden with bicycles and other necessary things. From our village base near Zapadnaya Dvina we have motored around across Zharkovski and Bely along rivers Mezha and Obsha and we have been rewarded with views of smooth flow of the rivers dodging among water-meadows, swamps, and forests and with an unexpected (for us) discovery of the 650-year-old town Bely. There the road crosses an ancient earth rampart, which in former times was crowned with a palisade.

We reached the crossing of the road and the former railway and began preparing the bicycles and other necessary things. Immediately we realized that the most indispensable thing - GPS receiver - has rested at home. Nevertheless, we made another reconnaissance up to the point where we would have to leave the road and to turn to the North. As we have been moving along the road, more and more ties have appeared, so that we have must ride aside or directly over the ties like by chatter bumps. The number of bloody mosquitoes also has been growing; somewhere the swamp has already almost got back its native possession, once taken away by the railway (pic 7).

Now we knew that next time besides bicycles and GPS we would need a considerable amount of repellent.

In a few days we undertook the final storming, having first checked up on the presence of the most necessary things. Having counted again a significant amount of railroad ties, we reached meridian N56, have hidden the bicycles in bushes and went to the north by foot, passing by small swamps, dense thrickets and a windbreak and being pleased with the speed, with which nature heals the wounds, caused by "economic activities" of people.

It was not that difficult to find the point N56-E33. Contrary to expectations, it appeared not in a bog, but on a nice dry place among a sparse deciduous forest. Having executed the traditional "dance of the confluence hunter" with the GPS-receiver in hands, we made the pictures necessary for the report (pic 2 - view to North, pic 1 - view to South, pic 3 - view to West, pic 4 - view to East, pic 5 - GPS at CP), recorded also also ourselves (pic 8), ate a pair of apples and started the way back.

However, our discoveries were not over yet. Passing the settlement Monino, we paid attention to ruins seen away from the road and have decided to approach closer to look at them in more detail. Near the bridge across the river Mezha a beautiful view has opened to us of a church of unusual architecture with a detached bell-tower settled on the high bank of the river (pic 10).

The abandonment breathing from the ancient ruins, with the dome overgrown with wood and stork's nest instead of a cross, astonishingly harmonizes with the surrounding backwoods and casts gloomy ideas about the destiny of our motherland.
